Need advice for my 90 gallon

I have been having a problem with my 90 gallon for a little while. I have just about killed all of my SPS corals. On the other hand, my yellow polpys, GSP, Kenya Trees, and Frogspawn and doing great.

I having been testing and nothing out of the ordinary.

Ok I am looking for someone that can come over and take a look at what I have had setup for about a year and see what needs to be done to run a better tank.

Sorry things aren't going well with the sps, Robert. Hopefully someone will be able to make it by and take a look. Could it be related to your bulbs? Some halides really start freaking out sps especially when they get past about 9 months.

The corals you listed as doing ok are photosynthetic and don’t need to be fed. I know because I have the same things and don’t feed them.

What SPS did you loose? Did they need to be fed? Like sun corals, ect?

Also, how many watts and how many lights? And are your T-5's normal or High Output? If you're not sure tell us how long the bulbs are and the wattage.

Just a thought.

What is your calcium, alk, pH and temp?

What SPS did you loose? : Well I had a large number of sps died on me. Milli, stag, Green Monti Cap, about 4 small colonies that I didn't know the name but looked similar to Milli.

Did they need to be fed?
Pretty sure they were getting what they needed. Twice a week I was putting in Plankton, Cyclopeze and reef Nutrition from Kent's. I also had a large fish load for a 90, and if I understand correctly, that is needed for the poop as it helps many SPS's. To counteract the large fish load I have a large skimmer an AquaC Remora 180 on a mag 7.

like sun corals, ect?
Nope none of these

Also, how many watts and how many lights?
got 6 T5's and they are 54watts each. I just replaced them about a month ago. Arrangement: 1 true blue, 1 actinic, 4 - 10K

And are your T-5's normal or High Output?
HO's

What is your

calcium: 450
alk: 9
pH: 8.1
temp: 78

Phos: <1
Nitrate: <1
Nitrites: 0

SG: 1.026

Did I miss anything, cold got my head spinning today.

OH...forgot to mention that I was using Two Part Solution to balance the tank.

I use Carbon about once every two weeks and water change 20 gallons every three weeks. Seems to keep everything in check.

Flow: I got two Hydro-Corlias 4's I think, and two Sieo's 820's. My return pump from my Refuge is a Rio 50HF (gets about 700GPH).

Well I think I found a little bit of the problem. I have a hugh build up of hair algea in my over flow. I think that the phosphates, nitrates, etc, might be reading bad with this much in the tank using it. I turned the tank off today and clean out as much as I can along with some in my refuge. I did a 40 gallon water change and vacuumed up my sand. I am going to let things settle down till tomorrow morning and retest everything.

Well.....everything today seems to be doing good. I retested the water and the only thing a little out of wack was the phosphates and Nitrites. Just as I expected, the large build up of algea in places that I don't see every day was using up much of them. I am going to let the tank settled down for a few days and do another 30 gallon water change. I am also looking for a phos / carbon reactor tube. (I think that is what you call it.) I got a Mag 3 that I am not using. Is that enough to power the water through it?

Are you referring to a Two Little Fishes Phosphate reactor? If so I use a maxi-jet 900 on mine (230gph). I still dial it back some. Your 350gph mag3 would be more than plenty to pump through it. I really like my two little fishes reactors. I run carbon once and awhile in one and phosphate removers in the other.

Yep that's the one.....I'm gonna look lit up now.

Thanks

hey kalied, if a you need a MJ900...i got one that im willing to trade....and i see that you have a mag3 that your not using...if you want to trade, let me know

Well I use it for water changes. I do have a MJ900 that is modded that I don't use. But not the same thing you are needing I think. I do have a MJ900 also. I have been collecting equipment when I can to set up my 50 Gallon Starfire tank. I just put it on hold till the 90 is balanced out better.

BOY, I can ramble on about nothing....laughing

naw,...i wasnt needing it for more flow...just looking for a new return pump for my 20......but if you dont mind me asking...what did you use to mod it?....i saw that AC sold some type of MJ mod...but that things looks ugly

It may look ugly, but that thing is powerful!!! I just wish my mod work properly, but it kept spinning into the sides, ended up taking it out of my tank, it sits there collecting dust right now until I figure something out, maybe re-mod it myself......

Robert, how's that Chihuahua??? :)
ps. That Kenya Tree I got from you is doing really good, one didn't make it though, it got blown behind the rocks never to be seen again....

I bought it from someone already done. It is the kit that they sell online though. It works great. got a magnet glass mount and everything. I was using it on a timer about 15 minutes every 3 hours or so. It was keeping the tank clean by blowing everything into the overflow and to the refuge. But since then I have reorganized the rock work and haven't use it.

CHACHA is doing good. Still barking at anything that moves, but we are working on that.

Mag 3 is likely too much for a phosphate reactor. I have one on my 40 breeder powered by a MJ900, and two in series (one GFO, one carbon) on my 75 powered by a MJ 1200. You have to turn the flow down with the supplied ball valve so that the GFO slightly "boils" or else it is ground into powder.
