Need advice on every day lens

I ahve a Canon Rebel XT that came with the standard lens the kits are equiped with. I would like to get some other lens that is much better for every day shooting. Something with a little more quality and zoom power. I want to stick to a Canon lens if at all possible, but if the price justifies it and there is some other quality lens I am willing to try it. I already have the Canon 100mm macro lens, and I can't get enough of it. I wished I could find something similar in quality in the daily use department.

For the crop body, 17-55/2.8 IS is the ultimate walk around lens but far too expensive for what it is. I have a 24-70/2.8 and I love it.
A more affordable choice would be the EF-S 17-85 IS lens.
That's sticking with Canon lenses.

Sigma has a 24-70/2.8 and Tamron has a 28-75/2.8 as well, check them both out although the Tamron has better reviews than the Sigma.

I have the 17-40 4.0L as my walking around lens and can't say enough good things about it. It is great.

What about the lens below? I was told it is pretty good, but have not hear anyone else mention it.

Canon EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 USM Image Stabilizer Lens
