Need Advice on New Reef build

I recommend to anyone to get a controller. The AquaController Jr. can do autotopoff, temp control (both heaters and/or fans), turn stuff on and off at the right times (main lights and sump lights), and all kinds of other stuff. Plus they keep up with your temp and pH, which is nice. Greatest part is that they're only about $270 I think for everything you would need from reefgeek.com.

Also, something that I don't think has been mentioned yet, IF you are an MTRC club member, you can get a discount at reefgeek on your lights and controller. The amount of the discount depends on the amount you spend, so if you bought your lights and controller at the same time, you could get a decent discount. I'd have to lookup again the exact amounts, though. I can't remember. :) Do note, though, that this is only if you are an MTRC member. :)

I noticed you said you thought about putting sump money into the controller... dude, get a sump and wait on a controller or save up a bit more (since you're wanting to go slow anyway) and get both. A sump is a bit intimidating with drilling the glass and etc., etc., but its more than worth it. You get to put most of your ugly equipment in it plus other neat stuff (such as a refugium which can help big time with nutrient export using macro-algae such as chaeto).

I'm not 100% what you're asking on your lights question, but to attempt to answer it, you will want at least 4 48" T5HOs. I personally would recommend the IceCap retrofit kits at ReefGeek. However, if you're doing a 120g, I would highly recommend getting at least 6 T5HOs. I have 4 T5HOs over my 45g tall because its 12.5" wide. If I had a 120, I'd definitely be putting at least 6 over it considering how much wider it is (I think they're 24"?).

Just some thoughts. :)

If you're feeling overwhelmed by all of this, just take your time and STUDY! You can't study for every thing, but learning more about different tank setups and techniques can at least get you started in the right direction in your next setup and quite possibly save you a lot of frustration or at least make you happier with your setup.

Hope this helps!

Also meant to mention, you can get the 4 bulb IceCap retrofit kit from ReefGeek for $299 instead of paying $400. :)

I appreciate the input. Im asking lighting question in general.

I might get MH if i get a good deal during thanksgiving. 6 bulbs are a lot...if its gona cost me $400 might aswell spend 2 hundred more and get the real deal.

The thing is my HO's look so good, but MH do have better clarity at a distance. The subtle fogginess doesn't exist.

Its just a budjet buster :)

The tank im about to get is 120 gallon Corner Flow Oceanic Reef Ready with holes already drilled and fittings ready to go. Plus it has 6 holes in the back for whatever purpose.

I was thinking that i will just add some valves for the holes under it and shut them off. That way i can add the sump whenever i want. First thing i need to do is to get a good RO/DI and auto top off system.

The real deal? How are T5s fake in any way, shape, or form? ;) If you'd prefer to give MH's a try (which is what I assume you're referring to), then go for it! Just be prepared for high heat and high running costs (bulbs need to be replaced every 6-12 months). At the same time, they do seem to give better color to corals in my limited experience. :)

What bulbs are you using? You may find that using different bulbs will take away your subtle fogginess you speak of. Or, if its stuff in the tank, a polishing filter may not hurt, either.

Why wouldn't you add a sump now? They're truly not expensive. Well, glass has gone up a bit, but they're still not too bad if you DIY it.

Obviously, though, its all up to you as its your tank! Have fun!

Exhibit A (read more TOTM's for more evidence):

http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2008-07/totm/index.php

I would like to put forth the hypothesis that the main reason that most halide tanks look better is because the owners have more money to start with or are more dedicated and are therefore willing to spend the money on lighting. In addition to buying "better" light, they are able or willing to afford better equipment all around... halides may have an edge, but I think for the average reefer, the edge is not as significant as most people think and probably not worth the additional cost.

I do not mean to suggest that you can "buy" TOTM status, but it takes time, money, AND knowledge to get there. In that equation, the effect of MH vs. T5's seems inconsequential... and I think the TOTM's show that.

Oh... did I mention NES rates are up 25%?
