Need advice on teardown and restart

Decoy, what are the newbie mistakes if you don't mind me asking.... might help others from not making them.

Oh, on the sand thing I have had a 1-3 inch sand bed using "Seaflor" premium grade or whatever, bit thicker than sugar fine. I have never touched the bed, don't stir it and didn't add anything special in the way of critters and haven't had any issues. If I add something with green hair algae on it (frags) the stuff dies within a few days. My skimmer is a bit undersized but I export a ton of macro to take up the slack.

Also, I now have my wife's 'permission' to upgrade some things that I've wanted to for a while Thanks for everyone's advice.

Ah, see, NOW the truth comes out. LOL. I have scratches on the front pane of my 16 year old 75 gallon. I have already started down the path of worrying her that it might leak and that we need an upgrade. I am on schedule of convincing her by about April. =)
