I am going to be moving my 65 gal to another room because when I painted the bedroom, I painted around the tank and now that I am downsizing you will be able to see the difference, and I need to keep the old tank up and running until I sell the rock . There will be about 5 or 6 days between the move and me setting up the new tank. When I move the old tank I want to reuse the sand for the new tank, can I put it in some sort of bucket in the tank with water in the tank then transfer the bucket of sand to my new tank, or will there be too big of a "cycle" from stirring up all that sand? Or should I just abandon the old sand and buy new sand?
Hope this makes sense to someone!

My rec is to replace the sand, any time ive moved a tank and removed sand that was established over a year or so it caused a mini cycyle. By useing new live sand I never had that problem so I am attributing it to the old sand, HTH

yeah, i have caused a cycle in my tank from just accidentally stirring up one whole side of my tank......... it sucked, i lost two fish. SO yeah, buy some new LS, or do what i am doing, buy aragonite, and then a couple pounds of LS to seed it, it saves alot of money

This is not a normal sign, seth, your tank was probably not finished with its cycle yet if stirring up sand caused a "new cycle". It was probably just a continuation of the cycle it was still going through.

don't reuse the sand if it's been established for a long time, not worth it! i lost half my tank doing that.
