hi,
If i were to make a sump from a 30 gallon tank with baffles in middle to hide my equipment, would salt and water splash out or do I need a lid?

what can i do to make water enter sump more quietly?

If you build it right, you shouldn't have any splash at all. The water entry would be under the water surface (this will keep it quieter, too). Might be a good idea to get a lid just to minimize evaporation and things dropping in the sump. Another idea to keep it quiet is to have some sort of dampening medium where the entry is.

Most people leave their sump un-covered. I guess you could use a cover to decrease evaportation and that might make it a tab bit quieter.

I have an extra piece of acrylic that I cut to fit over the sump as much as possible. It really helps keep evaporation down. Other than that, it just gets a lot of salt creep on it, and I have to remove it whenever I need to do something in the sump.
