Please let me know if this would be a good choice for my tank?

it is a harlequin serpent star. I'd like a seastar in my tank, you may have seen my posts. This one is only $10 and a good size. I've done some asking and apparently it's the green serpents that have the potential to eat fish as they get bigger, and I've been told to stay away from the greens. What do you think of this one?

They don't have any peppermint shrimp... dang... anyone have any pepps that need a new home?

The link doesn't work, but if it is the typical "Harlequin Serpent Star", then these are fine and beautiful additions to a tank. I have one myself. I haven't seen him in a while, but when I do the color pattern is just hypnotizing.

Also, what you are thinking is Brittle Stars. The Green Brittle Star is a voracious predator as well as a few other relatives of his. I personally don't like Brittle Stars because the common Serpent Stars are just as good a scavenger as any and are a lot less likely to be predatory.

Edit: I found the picture. That is a great price, and it is your typical "Harlequin Serpent Star". But for what it's worth, the one in the picture isn't very healthy. You can see that it has been damaged and is missing tips off of the arms.

DID YOU READ THIS PART?

The average size we sell have a body that is about the size of an average shirt button, but they can be as large as dime sized. The legs are usually about 2” to 3” long, and about the diameter of a cooked spaghetti noodle.

Now, that being said... have you looked at the GARF Grunge? That comes LOADED with sea stars and other stuff. You may want to check out GARF.ORG - Dan used to push that pretty heavy with me, and I would be interested in getting in on an order if you want to split...

In a batch, you get a few hundred, and they scavange like reef crabs... they are small, very small. Like the ones Kass was talking about the other day.

yeah, I'd be able to see this one! Those little white brittle stars are about the size of a quarter TOTAL, very small and hardly seen, the ones I had anyways. I will check that garf thing tho and let you know! I was figuring on getting some of those little guys from kass.

You dont have to order them from garf I have tons of them which came from garf lol. They multiply all the time.
Those mini brittles stay small and don't harm anything. They are alot smaller than this serpent would be.

I think you could try one of those stars Jess as it says they stay small and you don't want one too big.
He collects everything himself and wouldnt ship anything that was'nt healthy.
Last yr Joe and I ordered some corals from him along with some gorgonians. He had just started shipping gorgs and we had 2 day arrival. They arrived kinda beat up and a few died but not all. He replaced all of them and sent them overnight which arrived great and I still have mine.
He won't ship those 2 day anymore.

That must be the purple gorgonian I have. He was going to sell it when they moved but then sold the rest of their gorgonians, so he decided to keep that one. But he was nice enough to cut off a piece a couple inches long for me, it has grown nicely. :)

Yep. He ordered all different kinds, all beautiful. I ordered both kinds of purples and still have them. Yours was the frilly.

I have 2 serpent stars. Had them both for approx 2 years or more. Mine are not as pretty as some, but they serve their purpose. You won't see them during the day. Except for an occasional leg waving in the open during feeding time. Used to worry they weren't getting enough to eat. I have never had any aggression from them. And they are with fire/skunk cleaner shrimp. I have the 2 in a 210gal. Their central disc is between a quarter & half dollar size.

Correction Michelle your gorg was the purple plume he has now I think.
When I ordered he had 2 kinds of purples. I think my other one is a purple sea rod. Its alot fatter. Both are cool.

I have the bigger serpents also in my 150 (mine are maroonish color) and wouldnt get one that big for your tank Jess.
I think that one you picked would be perfect.
Mine arent out all the time either but as soon as food hits the water they come a running lol.

If you've seen Mike's tank (mako) then you've seen his stars, big! If I remember right he has a green brittle...? I do remember staring at it for a while anyways. Thanks for the posts, and yes Kass I will take some of those stars, er, someday! :) I look forward to my new addition!

Heres the one from johns's tank, I think you need one like this...
