need help....ASAP

Well I just went on vaca left the tank for my mom to take care of. anyways there has been no new introductions to the tank in the last 4 months. i come upstairs to find i have to nicely sized pieces of rock covered in green hair algae, how do i get rid of this and why the sudden outburst.

i went to grab my things to test the water and there missing so hopefully tomorrow after class/work i can get a new test kit
 
Did you ask your mom how much she's been feeding the tank or how long she's had the lights on (if they're not on a timer)? You've probably got excess nutrients in there. And how could your test kit just disappear?
 
lights are on a timer. blues turn on at 9 am then white and blues on at 11 to 5 then blues from 5 to 9. as far as the test kit goes i have no idea i searched my room high and low. my nephew likes to steal stuff on the tank stand.
 
Get a tennenti tang, juvenile. I'll take a vid and post it sometime.. My "Lieutenant" is constantly mowing, it's amazing!

Anyway, usual scenario from a relative baby sitting a tank is overfeeding, leading to GHA bloom. Your test kit may show low nitrates since all the nitrates are currently in the GHA. If you can, take out the GHA covered rocks with your next water change and scrub/strip the GHA off in the waste saltwater.

If you ever find your test kit and your tests show an outrageously high nitrate, you can do a near 100% water change and drop that nitrate down without fear of stressing livestock. Just make sure the new water and the tank water are pH and temp compatible.

Man I hate being Tang Police, but you're recommending a Tang that has a 100 gallon minimum on Live Aquaria. I've also had a Tang in a 55, it isn't fun even if it's a juvenile. I keep getting rid of the damn things because they outgrow my tanks.
 
Heh-heh :) Knew I'd get in trouble. I am just so amazed at the lawnmower action. Alright, don't get a tang. Just clean the rocks like above..
