Need help converting to .jpeg

I am shooting in RAW and editing in Adobe Lightroom and after I get my picture looking the way I want it, I export it to jpeg. However, I am losing quite a bit of detail and the photo darkens up a bit. I am not sure how to explain it, but it seems to be more grainy and almost looks like it is using way less colors. Actually after messing around with the contrast slider, it looks as if it is bumping up the contrast quite a bit in the conversion.

Is this just the way it is? or am I doing something wrong?

What is the best way to convert a photo to a much more universal format?

i'd need to know more about your process, specifically, to tell you what you're doing wrong but here's a few tips.

1. Make sure that you're converting to sRGB during the export. (This is really important)
2. Check the quality slider. A lower number makes a smaller file but will degrade the image.

Weird, it might be windows picture viewer that is showing less quality photos.... It seems after I upload them to photobucket and view them via the internet, they seem to be closer to the original. Maybe there is something wrong with my windows picture viewing software? I don't know, but yes I am using sRGB and converting at 100%.
