Well I either need some one to drill a few holes in glass for me or I need to purchase a glass drill bit and would rather have an experienced hand to show me the procedure I am in West Des Moines

Thanks

Sup Adam, setting up some reef tanks now? Still doing freshwater rays? I really want to get some but i got a kid on the way.

What are you drilling anyway? I've drilled a bunch of tanks using a dremel and a tile cutting bit. It's super easy you just need to run cold water on where you are cutting and go slow. The tile cutting bits are like 10 bucks. I just drilled a 125 that way last month with no problem.

If nothing else get a hold of tinytool, ill bet he'll do it for ya.

Good luck!

of course I am still doing all the freshwater I have had a reef in the past just decided to change all my glass tanks over to SW but as for fW I have about 3500 gallons worth of it still.. I might try the tile bits on a couple of tens just for practice before I try to drill my new half circle.....

If you are around cedar rapids, i have a glass drill bit you can borrow. let me know

thanks for the offer but I am in West Des Moines l

Adam, the key is to go slow. If you can do it out side just have somebody hold the garden hose so you can keep cool water running on the cut. Just drill a hole with the bit and then follow your line. I usually trace my bulkheads threads with a sharpy and then cut on the outside of that line just to make sure my hole isn't too small.

After a couple tries with the 10 gallon you will see how easy it is. Another thing to keep in mind is to keep it as round as possible. Just keep your eye on the line.

If i were in DM I'd come and do it for ya' but i think if I can do it, you shouldn't have any problems.

Have fun!

Adam, just another thought, make sure what you are trying to drill is not tempered. If it is, it will just explode when you try and drill it.

they didnt use tempered on the bottom and backs of the half circles and I will be drilling the backs of the tens and a few 55s

really never heard that before I knew bottoms were mostly tempered but never heard of the sides of small tanks being tempered I will have to look into it

Those youtube links are awful! Being that i blow glass for a living i happen to know a thing or two about safety issues with working with glass. See all that "dust" flying everywhere in that link? That is silica. Know what happens when you breath that? It goes into your lungs and cause microscopic cuts. These cuts then turn into scar tissue. Once you get so much scar tissue in your lungs you can't breath and die. Look up siliconosis....

If any of you decide to drill your tanks do it responsibly and use water to keep the dust down. Even if the guy in the link vacuums when he is done those fine particles of dust shoot right out the vacuum and back into the air.....water is the key.

Try to brace the area your are drilling also. You are dealing with very thin panes on the 10's and they cannot take much pressure.
