Having a refugium with macro algae will definitely help lower your phosphates, but normally you might need a large one to be most effective. It wouldn't hurt to have one. I would start with a 20-30% change initially and test your phosphates. A comparison between gfo and a refugium with chaeto, you would notice the gfo to be much quicker at removing phosphates but the media will also become saturated quickly. If you can find the right balance, it will be great. I use a refugium in conjunction with gfo and I'm able to keep my phosphates relatively low.
