I have probably 80-100 total water volume right now, plan on upgrading to a 210 maybe by the end of next year. Just sold my old skimmer, now I need to purchase a new skimmer that I can use for now and later when I upgrade. I am thinking of getting an MSX200 or a octopus nw200. What do you guys think of either or if anything out there that you would recommend for now and the future tank I would appreciate the feedback. Thanks.

Hey Vu,

I have the Octopus Xtreme 200 same as the msx200. You can stop out sometime and check it out, I also have a couple of galexea's (spelling?) that I just accidentally fragged if you want one or two. I like the skimmer, would like to see more foam but I think my with my small amout of fish I'm pulling all I can. I also have a nice sized green leather if your interested.

Zach.

Evenings be ok for you? I might have to come and check out that skimmer. Thanks again Zach, whats a galaxea anyways I dont even know what it looks like :).

vietcu,

I have a G2 on my 75 (+~20 in sump) and it does a great job. I don't have th recirc mod that the one being sold on here has, but you're welcome to come over and see what it pulls. I'm happy with it.

if your going to 200 plus gal system ,,your going to need something a bit more than a G-2 , they are rated for 200 gals by AMS. you can cut that into half in reality , or slightly above half. look for a G-3 or G-4 to run that much water , or a skimmer that is rated for at least 300 gal to handle 200 plus gals of water should work just fine for you. skimmers and lights are MAJOR players in the success of your tank. dont buy a smaller skimmer , and come to find out its not cutting it , start right away with the right stuff , saves you time and headaches of dealing with it all the time ,,,,,, the MSX250 would be more like it for that size tank ,,,,,,

Oh, I didn't see you future upgrade plans. Don't get the G2, get something bigger as murph said. No point in buying one now then having to upgrade so soon.

there ya go ,,,G-4 is a nice simple skimmer , will work fine for 200-250 gal system for sure , not to hard to dial in , works very good and simple as heck to maintain , most say the G series from AMS are not the best skimmers out there ,but they are not the worst either , sorta middle of the road good, easy skimmer , and if you jack them up with mesh mod , gate valve mod they can kick butt ,,,,,

Jeff , shoot over to the Pet Solutions web site , they have all the specs right on the page for AMS skimmers

What is the footprint on the g4? I have a 40g for a sump right now so I don't think a g4 would fit. The tank is 36x12x21.

I think I will end up getting that msx extreme 200, excatly the same as the octo 200. If I have to upgrade later down the road, will just sell and upgrade. Thanks for all the help guys. Because who knows when the wife will let me upgrade to a bigger tank. I am shooting for late next year, but we'll see.

I still have the skimmer listed in my long "for sale" thread. It is a really good performer and is powered by a Sedra 5000 needlewheel. It is Item #27. It worked very well on my 300 gal system until I upgraded it to about 600g and then upgraded my skimmer. It will definitely impress you for the $125. I thought it was sold but ended up available again.
