Need help on purchasing a new skimmer.

MSX... no question.

Unless you were considering a Euro-Reef, then maybe the decision gets a little more difficult. The MSX will blow the octo and ASM out of the water. If you go for the Octo Extreme, just make sure you're getting the Sicce pump with it.

btw.. the MSX is basically the ATI bubblemaster for less than half the price! Hands down, it's the best skimmer available for the price.

So T.J. you are an unbiased consumer and not very opinionated... correct?

What makes any brand of skimmer better than the other if it has the same sized body, same air drawn through the venturi and same wattage used? I have always felt that you could make any skimmer into the equivalent name brand skimmer by doing the modifications needed to bring the older model up to current specs. ie. meshwheel, gate valve etc...

I know there are guys out there saying that nothing beats their Euro-Reef and others say that nothing beats a Deltec. There have been ASM fans and even Remora or Prizm fans. I think it all boils down to what you are expecting from the money you spend.

Aren't they all just tubes of saltwater mixed with air and a collection cup on top?

How can you test for skimmer production comparing my skimmer to yours when our systems are 100% different other than the fact that we both have salt in our water :)

Just some of the things that run through my head when one person is so gung-ho for a certain product manufacturer. One example would be my skimmer that is so close to a GEO 618 CA reactor that if I had the sticker on it George might not know he didn't build it himself.

Not trying to be argumentative here but I think statements like "it's the best skimmer available for the price" should be prefaced with "in my opinion" or "from my experience".

Hope the message came across without sounding like I am picking a fight.

No worries Kev... I told Sean earlier I was hesitant about posting on this thread.

There's just nothing in the price range of the MSX that can compete with it "out of the box"

That's what makes it better. You're getting an $800 skimmer design for $300. I've even seen side by side testing between the MSX & ATI, and the MSX outperformed the ATI. Plus you get the energy efficient Sicce pump.

It's a well known fact that everyone "thinks" their skimmer is the best until they upgrade. Maybe I'll be one of those guys in the future.

Opinionated... me? no way... :p

Here are some videos of these guys cranking away. The amount of air they pull is just ridiculous. Once again... for their price. ;)

From what I have heard the MSX is the exact same skimmer as the Octo 200 Xtreme. I paid well under $300 for my X 200.

Nobody was debating that... When I referred to "octo" I was talking about the Octo NW models.

If you paid "well" under $300 for a new Octo Xtreme 200, then I would bet it is not the same skimmer. They run right around $300. If you're Octo Xtreme came with any pump other than a Sicce pump it is NOT the same skimmer.

If you did somehow score a new one for well under $300, then you found a great deal.

Reef Octopus Extreme 200 from AquaCave 200

Reef Octopus Extreme 200 from Fishy Business

Marine Solutions MSX 200 from Marine Solutions

I mean here's the same skimmer labeled by the manufacturer as the SWC Extreme 200... once again... right around $300

SWC Extreme 200 from Salt Water Connection

$279 is not "well" under $300

That's the normal price. If you're supplier threw in shipping, that's a bonus.

Why was your mesh mod not done? Now that strikes me as odd... or did they also include the pinwheels with the skimmer?

Regardless... they're great skimmers, and you'll love it once you get it cranking away.

Sorry if our definition of "well" is not identical.

It came with needle wheel and mesh. The guy also gave me a ten head frag of fire and ice and sorry for the mistake but it was actually $274.99. I'll find and post the link when I get home if Vu is intersted in buying one. He is located in Lebanon Ohio.

Well thanks to Tj's help I went ahead and purchase the octo extreme from aquacave. Was going to get the msx, but the freaking site charged me tax ( did I say that). So the one that is coming from aquacave better have that sicce pump. Too late Sean, thanks anyways. You can always frag me a piece of that fire and ice and we can say I got the same deal ;).
