For my new skimmer I have decided upon this one.

http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/Prote...05/p754/Octopus-Extreme-200/product_info.html

I think it's the same as the MSX but Octopus is made in N. America right? There is no "skimmer" difference?
Correct... I think there is a slight pump difference between the 2... they both use the same Sicce pumps, but I believe each may use a different pin-wheel impeller, and I think one of the pumps has a larger volute or something.

I can't remember which is which though... I stopped following up on them a while ago. Someone in the Lighting, Filtration, and Other Equipment Forum forum would be able to get you an accurate answer.

as you can see i had the same problem as you do now. i forgot to ask, but what exactly are your params? if your MG is too low then it could be fueling the growth as well.

Why would low Magnesium fuel growth?

bump to the Magnesium question.

Also just tested params.

Mg: 1400
Ca: 480
dKH: 7.9ish
Nitrates: 0 or undetectable
Salinity: 1.025

Well for anyone that is interested here is an update... I just finished drilling my first time through glass... worked pretty well I think! Doing a leak test and yes, we have two small leaks.

This is for my new skimmer... which will be before the actual sump. I bought 1/4" glass.

There is no need for a top brace since the water height is around 9 inches when it goes into the drain holes, which lead to the sump.

In the second picture, I have thin strips of glass in a smaller square shape on the inside of the tank to help with bracing as well.

Wow... my skimmer could swim laps in that thing. Very roomy.

Good job on the drilling. I've never done it. I just paid the glass shop to do it.

Keep the updates come'n! :)

Thanks Whys... it is 21 x 21 inches. I was originally going to silicone a baffle in there but I decided not to and just use that piece of glass for drilling practice... Both of the final products came out pretty smooth except one hole is a bit higher than the other and has a a chip of glass taken off along with the circle shape.. but it should be ok.

Any water that doesn't make it through the first drain will just head into the second.

Tomorrow is lights day and silicone the sump baffles :)

Lights installed, ballasts wired, metal halides on.... wow!

Night and day between T5s.... I got them running on my new ReefKeeper 2 :) The shimmer is so nice!

Bottom of the pendant is 14" off the surface just like it's suggested by reefkeeping magazine and the manual for the lumen bright III reflectors.

Ordered the octopus 250 skimmer model.. same as swc...

Should be here in a week, to place into the skimmer box :)

So tired... spent 11 hours straight working on the tank today and gluing and cutting and etc... the redo is 99% complete I guess....

Just have some minor clean up the wires and add a spray bar, piping on ceiling.

But the new sump is running... along with my new Octopus Extreme 250 skimmer, new halides, new lights, reefkeepr 2 controller, 2 vortechs, gfo/carbon reactor... so we'll see how my algae issue does in the coming months...

Also had a horrible sucking noise from the bulkheads on my skimmer box so some epoxy on the top of the strainer fixed that.

Skimmer box is STILL leaking... one drop every few minutes... so I just shoved some epoxy in the area... no way I'm taking it apart again.

Pics to come soon.

My skimmer isn't skimming anything yet... I assume it has to kick in? Where should I put the water level?

One of the tubes also was split when I tried putting it over the air intake on the sicce pump.. so I put some ductape around it. Will the tape affect my water quality? You can see it in the second picture under the video. It's a little black piece of ductape on the white airline tube inside the skimmer box.

Hey... lost track of the thread... looks like some nice updates.

You need to give the skimmer 2 weeks to "break in" before starting to get concerned over the performance.

I run the water level in mine about 1/8" - 1/4" below where the skimmer body begins to taper to the neck.

However, I would start low... and make small adjustments... then give it a few hours to react and settle.

Last thing you want to do is set the skimmer, then walk away... and come back to it overflowing everywhere

Also, you will want to replace the flimsy airline tubing that runs from the pump to the air silencer. Go get some nicer stuff from Lowes or Home Depot.
