need help trapping unwanteds

:hammer: My first shipment is a week old and my pal Peter (a marine biologist) came to check things out and tell me what I had. In addition to the great stuff I have a Mantis Shrimp (about 2" long and ... believe it or not ... an Octopus, about 3" tentacles (I have seen 2 baby octos at night). can't put any fish, shails, crabs in till I can trap and remove them ... Peter gets the Octopus! :uzi:

Also have a "blue meanie" that I can't identify, but Makarian421 had a pic of one he got also ... nasty loooking claws, so he has to go too ..

Shouldn't put in any fish until several weeks after package 2. Unless you like to spend lots of money on stuff that dies. Just remember take everything slow. My part one I had for 4 weeks before I got part 2. Part two has been installed now for almost 3 weeks. I have just begun feeding the inhabitants in it now some micro algae and will be feeding the anemone shortly that came with package 2. Probably will not get the two fish I want for another month or so still.

Thanx dude ... been watching your progress on RC also ... nice tank and collection ... been emailing with Richard and was going to get just the part2 rock (no critters) but am going to tell him to wait if I can't get the 3 amigos this weekend. I'm going to take out all the rock (hopefully all except the one that sank th Titanic) and wash, scrape, suck them out. At least with 10 rocks it will be easier and faster. Don't plan on fish for quite some time, but watching a cleaning crew would be cool. I'll try and get som pics up soon. Thanx again .... Bruce

There are fairly easy to build traps that should be effective at catching the mantis and crab. That would be a heck of a lot easier than taking all of the rock out.

Not sure about the octopus though.

We had a baby octo to. But it didn't make it either. Still finding an occasional gorrila crab. There is this one that taunts me.

Thanx Jocko ... I'm going to try the water bottle trap thing for a couple of days, but if I don't get them by Sunday morning ... it's adios ... taking out the roc (except the huge one) won't be too bad. That way there will be no (I hope) waiting ... some have said it takes 1 - 2 months sometimes to actually catch Mantis... I'm not THAT patient! (The bottle trick should work for the octo also if I can entice him out of his cave ... if you touch their tentacles with the food, they will smell it and follow the scent)

Haven't spotted any gorillas, yet, and there are no new excavations... only the one by the blue crab ... maybe I got lucky with that one

Not to worry, the baby octos will not make it as they have no food source......and you should post in the octo forum, there are people who would kill for them!
