Need Help with Corals

Is there a place to find out what the various corals are. I looked at the various forums but couldn't find anything to defines SPS, LPS, etc. Being a beginner I don't know what all the many various types are and the methods of the use of frags, etc.

Well lets start off by saying that the LPS, SPS, softie names only come from us in the hobby. There is no designation in science for these names or the types of corals we group together under these names.

A general rule of thumb I have found is if it has large swaying polyps, its probably an LPS. Tight, small, and tree like, it's probably an SPS. If the entire coral sways in the current including its base, softie.

If it has a hard skeleton its an LPS or SPS, otherwise referred to as a stony coral.

Check out Live Aquaria site. There you'll be able to see what's in the SPS, LPS, and softies categories. Plus, you'll get the specific requirements for each of the corals so you'll know if it will survive in your tank or get along with other corals, fish, etc.

Tidal Gardens on youtube has many videos talking about and showing different corals. Plus the guy who does the vids is relaxing to listen to.

SPS = Small polyp stony: acropora, montipora,
LPS = Large polyp stony: candycanes, brains, acans, frogspawn, hammer, torch
Soft "corals" = anything we call corals, but don't have a skeleton: leathers, mushrooms, zoanthids, palys, star and clove polyps

I've been into reefing now since August and I'm still reading. 9x-10, when I'm on my phone (usually any down time, I know, it's bad) I'm reading reading reading. Watching videos. Scanning forums. That's one of the coolest things about this hobby is all the information out there. The ins and outs of keeping coral and fish. Just a boatload of info.

I mean heck, it's 3:30am here. I woke up at 2:30 to use the restroom, and here i lay..... on the forums. Reading... watching....[emoji851] I should really be sleeping.. Happy reefing!

Thanks everyone. So much reading to do!
