Need Help With Volitans Lionfish

I was told about this site by a few people on TONMO so I thought i'd check it out. I'm tryin to set up a 75 gallon tank with a Volitans Lion. I've had saltwater tanks, but I know nothing about these fish. My plan is to just get set up with a skimmer, sump, and some live rock. I also would like to know what kinds of fish can be housed with a Lion. And should I put a refugium on the system? I might be thinkin of a kind of overkill system, i've been lookin into ceph care for a while and they need somethin like 3x the filtration. Any info would be much appreciated. Thank you for your time.

I guess what i'm asking is, what small species of lionfish looks the best? I know thats a matter of opinion, but I wanna know what you all think. Which one is the best and why?
 
you should not pick which looks the best/coolest/most bad *BLEEP* ;P
you should pick which IS the best fit for THIS 75 gallon tank
 
Dude you can keep a lion in a 75 and it will be perfect. Hell if people want to get that into it then what we do with all these fish is wrong no matter how big the box is its not the ocean. I had a lion in my 80 and someone wanted him really bad so being the nice guy i am i gave him to them. Im going to get another one this week or next week. Groupers are pretty cool,and you can keep one with a lion. I have an argus and its pretty cool.
 
You can keep a V. lion for in a 75, but be aware if he starts to outgrow it.

Great fish. I housed a few things with mine, some with success, some not. Basically anything larger then its mouth, which can open up huge, can be kept with them. They can fit long skinny fish in their mouth easier(blenny type) Versus a Damsel. I had a damsel and a Lion together for 6 months. They were fine. Give the fish lots of places to hide.

Lion fish on a Reef just chill for most of the time, letting fish go past them all the time. They will eventually get one though, and you probably you will have a fish casualty if you house them together, so be aware. Keep cheaper fish, but that is not an advert to let them parish :)

They can eat your crabs, but if feed are ok,and will DEFINITELY eat your shrimp.
 
I wouldn't worry about a volitan in a 75g. As long as it's not too overcrowded with rock work and there's plenty of swim room it won't be an issue IMO. If you really want to go with a dwarf lion however I'd second the fu manchu!!!! SAWEET looking! Pretty much any aggressive fish would be a fine co-habitant. Triggers, eels, puffers and scorpion fish to name a few.
 
agree about the rock work. When I added some to mine, my lion did not swim over to one side of the tank because it was too high - cutting off swim room.
 
cool cool. if the volitan would be ok in a 75 ill go for it. i read that they need an 18 inches+ wide tank to turn around. i also read that eels and scorpionfish eat lions in the wild, so does anyone have any suggestions on specific fish. if it wouldnt be too crowded, id go with a snowflake eel, a damsel, a grouper, and volitan. opinions?
 
also can they be housed with any starfish or urchins? im thinkin on what kinds of cleaner animals i could throw in there, but it sounds like they eat a good amount of them.
 
Yup fu manchu lion fish do look awsome, same thing with volitans :). A grouper and a volitan in a 75g is crazy though!
 
lion will eat all your tank mates unless thay are bigger than him thay can ge picky most like live food and when u feed it gold fish and stuff its hard on them shortens thair life you can get them to eat silver sides
 
I was just readin that same think lawnmower blenn. I guess the idea is to give them oceanfish because most freshwater fish dont have the highly unsaturated fatty acids that lions need. I'm not too keen on feeder fish anyways, they have a pretty good probablility of getting sick. And one sick feeder means a whole tank of sick feeders. I lost a tank full of piranha because of that... not cool.
