Can anyone identify this coral and is it healthy?

I really like that pic of coral. I'm a bit worried it doesn't look like its grow since I got it. Also how does it feed and can I spot feed it.

The left bottom side does not look healthy - in fact, it looks dead. How long have you had it? What are your tank parameters/lighting/etc.?

Photosynthetic corals like yours feed mostly through a symbiotic relationship with zooxanthallae algae located in its tissues. They don't require much feeding from you, if any at all. They are able to grab food (such as fish poo, free-floating eggs, etc.) from the water column with their tentacles. Most corals extend tentacles at night, which is when they usually feed. If you want to feed it, you can turn off all the flow (preferably about an hour after the lights go off). Just place a bit of food on the polyps if the tentacles aren't out (like sinking fish pellets, mysis shrimp, etc.) If the coral doesn't eat the food within 30 minutes, remove the food and turn the flow back on.

Thanks for that bit of info on feed it, as for the lighting I have an led light the brand is fluval sea with 312 LEDs and 25W

The tissue on that left side should grow back given time.

I'm not sure how often you do water changes, but when you do, you might want to lift the coral up off the substrate and then set it down again. You don't want the edges to get buried. Also, rotating it 90 degrees every now and then will benefit the coral as well. GL.

SLOW growers I my experience. Nursed one back to Heath in 45-60 day thought it would be great in my tank and grow like a weed. Well it stayed healthy. Zero noticeable growth in 8 months. Wife disliked it :-(. Wife should be listed under fatal coral diseases. Someone else is now the proud owner.

Not to sidetrack the op topic but can anyone say if this piece would flourish on a upper level in the tank. A tank with both T5 and led lighting or should it be kept at a lower level?

It might. I had a similar piece that was place about midway in my old 60 gallon breeder. It was receiving quite a bit of flow, and was under 4 110 watt VHO bulbs, which is not too different from your T5's IMO. Give it a shot for awhile and see how it responds. GL

Thanks cloak, having trouble deciding how to / and what to buy to aquascape a new tank. The OP has a nice piece of coral and I hope to locate one near me. So far from what I see online I'm thinking I'll end up with a small patch of colorful zoa's, mostly Acan's one by one since if I recall they were somewhat pricey and some brain type corals. The wave'y types look cool but undecided and really still researching those.

My only real problem is my lfs isn't l !!! However it's been made clear they are the premier brick and mortar on the whole eastern seaboard by educated shoppers I've talked too. Except for an excellent selection and those demanding prices. I only have the word of the people I've talked too not in the store actually but going and coming from it. Will be getting my first piece one day this week and it's gonna look funny with one piece in a big tank. lol

But hey I been looking at an empty tank almost two months now. :)

What is the length of your tank?, the tissue death may be due to the led, IMO, any led under 1w EACH isn't the best for a reef tank. The tissue will probably grow back, but it may take longer due to the intensity. feeding them a food such as Ultra LPS would increase the rate of growth, and bring out the colours.
