need help

okay well i bought a clam recently and feel im going to have to end up fw dipping. more and more i notice part of the mantle not extend, but just a small part of the mantle. i took it out of the tank to try to check underneath it, but because of that damn weird shaped plug it came on, i cant really see anything. what i did notice was a mini brittle starfish come out and i noticed a type of snail that started moving but i couldnt pull it out, again because of the disk the clam came on. what i can say was it had a black shell with some brown

t.maxima
size: 3 1/4"
pH: 7.9-8.0
magnesium: 1300
Alk: 8-9dKH
calcium: 400ppm

any help would be really awesome. im wondering if i should do this fw dip

i also want to remove it from the plug some how

What,if any, fish do you have in the tank? Could be getting picked on. Also look in the scutes(ridges) of the shell and see if you see any tiny rice sized white snails. These little guys will pierce the mantle tissue and suck the life out of a clam.

i only have 3 fish and none of them pick on it. i have 2 other clams ive had for a while now. i have 1 yellow watchman goby, 1 royal gramma, and 1 yellow tail blue damsel

i still need to figure out how to get under the clam to remove it from the annoying plug it came on. the plug curves with the bottom of the shell.

i didnt notice anything unusual. a brittle starfish came out and an amphipod, some sand, and nothing else. i did see that snail i reported, but i couldnt do anything about it because of the plug

i fw dipped for 20 min and put him back, he opened up but ill know for sure by tomorrow morning if its doing better

pulled through and definitely isnt receding anymore like it was. its extending the mantle all the way around. before part of it was slowly starting to recede into the shell while the other side was out. nothing was on the shell that could have been bothering the mantle

are you familiar with the whelk ?

to remove the plug you can use a sharp razor to cut the byssal thread as far from the clam as possible. as long as you're careful you should be able to remove the clam without hurting it.

i dont think it was that, it was more similar to a sundial snail, very small. after the fw dip i noticed it still on the plug. hope he died, but one can only hope

so far the clam is just doing awesome. really looks great
