Need ID help!

Always bring a towel
I came home from work and saw this patch of stuff on my sand. Can some ID it for me? What is causing it and how do I get rid of it?

It is brown, not the red like in the picture.

Diatom bloom you have relatively new tank huh. Have to let them run their course as far as i know you can also vacuum them out.

I forgot to mention it is stringy, does that change anything?

When I got home today, there was this brownish stringy stuff all over the rocks and the patch on the sand had gotten bigger, and it was extra stringy.

I vacuumed a bunch while doing with a 5 gallon water change. I also blew a bunch off the rock with my turkey baster.

It is dinos, or diatoms?

So what can I do to get rid of it?

I should note I'm in the beginning stages of running zeovit.

Check flow in that area as well as your nutrient levels. To get rid of it really quick is 2 or 3 day lights out but it will return if you don't address flow and nutrient export.

I am running Zeovit, and I have cheato in my sump as well. I don't know what else I can do for nutrient export.

I have adjusted the flow in the tank. I pointed one of the power heads towards the front of the tank where the most of the growth is, but all the sand in the front is getting blow back and a "sand dune" has been created a couple of inches back from the glass. I don't know how I like this orientation of my poweheads. One pointed at the front glass from the left wall and one pointed at the left wall from the right wall.

What about water changes? What are your current parameters (nitrates, phosphates)

I have dealt with this just recently.... increase the flow lengths wise of the take so that the sand isn't tossed around.

Its just a little bit and may just go away with time...
Just siphon it out with your next water change and see what happens..

If it keeps spreading turn off the lights.. wrap the tank in a towel or something so no stray light hits it. and leave it like that for 2-3 days.. It will be gone. Your corals/fish will not be seriously effected by the lights out..

I've found "flow" to be mostly ineffective with cyano unless you are literally blowing it off whatever its on but thats just spreading it somewhere else..

I did a 5 gallon water change on Wednesday, and another 10 gallons change today when I got home from work.

I know for a fact the my nitrates are higher than I would like, somewhere around 6-10. For some reason my Red Sea Pro Nirate kit doesn't show the same color when I do the high range test.

My phosphates where .03 the last time I checked, which I don't think is that bad.

I moved my power heads back to how I had them. Nothing was liking the new flow pattern.

It keeps spreading. It has basically covered my zoa frag. It is all over the rocks and in patches on the sand. I started blowing it off with a turkey baster to get it down stairs and hopefully into my skimmer.

I can't really go lights out. I'm going on vacation for a week and my tank sitter is not a aquarium person, so I'm hoping that the little food that I'm going to have them add will also help with the nutrient issue.

Honestly, I believe it was me just overfeeding, and that combined with organic carbon dosing for Zeovit was a perfect storm waiting to happen.

At this point get the nitrstes down and do a 2 blackout and you will be good.... Just get the nitrates under control.

How big of a tank?

40 breeder with a 40 sump.

Like I said in my previous post, I was being a little heavy handed with my feeding ,and my Zeovit system hadn't been calibrated correctly for my tank size.

So hopefully I'll be good with lite feeding over the next week while I'm gone.
