I just bought two mated pair (so-called) true percs at my lfs. They are wild caught from the Solomon Islands. I think they are ocellaris, but the lfs owner said that some true percs come without the wide thick band between the first and second white stripe.

(sorry for the pix quality, I have a cheap digicam)

Can anyone verify if these are really true percs or if they are ocellaris. I tried counting the spines on their dorsal fin but I find that rather difficult.

ditto on the percs, but without the black, might as well have gotten ocellaris. At least they are mated, hope you got a good deal on them.

Looks like percs, the forehead slopes a bit more..

As for the "ring around the eye" I am not sure thats entirely true. Grab the Wilkerson Clownfishes book, Pgs 66 and 67 have a pic of an ocellaris and a percula. NEITHER have the black ring around the eye.. My 6 year old ORA ocellaris also do not have a black ring around the eye.

Price is usually be biggest giveaway. Perculas are usually 2x or more the price of an ocellaris.

If those are the pics I am thinking about, they are the same fish IDed differently in the two pics. :D

thanks for all the help. i bought these pairs because i noticed that on the female's third white stripe was somewhat misbarred (and i simply love the brilliant orange). it doesnt show on the pix i posted (its on the other side). it doesnt connect fully, so im hoping that a very small percentage of the fries that they lay and hatch will be misbarred...keeping my fingers crossed.

i'll get some more pictures up tonight.

Nope, different fish for sure. The one on pg 66 doesnt really have a black border on the white stripes, the one on pg 67 has a very noticeable black border on all the white stripes..
