My skimmer has been running intermittently for a few months. Sometimes just shaking it will get it to come back on, but now it has quit completely. I desperately need a new pump. It has been off for three days already and my stoney corals are starting to show signs. Please let me know what I have to do to get a replacement. I know you have helped me with some pump stuff before, really appreciate your time. Thanks. Rob Carpenter

If this is a warranty request you will need to send the old pump in and if it cannot be repaired it will be replaced. The warranty is 2 years. The current equivalent is 9011.040 and you can order it on Tunze.com, we have them in stock and if you ordered today it would ship UPS ground from Austin, TX tomorrow. I honestly think this pump is likely repairable, it is possible that we passed the point where it could have been repaired and it is now toast, but typically the symptoms you describer are just a worn drive unit, it may have since overheated and shut down permanently. Your corals should be fine, I would run some fresh carbon and do weekly 10% water changes in the interim. If you decide to send the pump in warranty or otherwise we typically complete a repair within 24hours of receipt.

I purchased the skimmer in january of 09. So I am about 5 weeks out of warranty I suppose. Does this mean that I am fully responsible for the cost of repair or replacement? Also, could you give me a rough estimate of the new pump or average repair bill? I am not going to spend $250 for a pump that has a tendency to quit hours after the warranty runs out. Thanks for your time.

Yes, however, I don't feel this criticism is fair, a few months ago, your pump was 100% repairable, even outside of warranty the max repair bill would have been under $30. This is like driving a car that is making a strange noise and choosing to ignore it. If the motor has not overheated and burned out, the repair bill would still be $27.30, for part 3000.600, if it is completely dead, the cheapest repair possible is a 9011.015 motor and 1205.700 drive unit totalling $120.98.
