so im starting to get some algae growth on my rocks and of course my mantis takes out any small hermits and snails, so they are out of the question. so what about the following

long spined urchin
small sea hare
types of star fish?
or maybe some thicker shelled snails like astrea's

any other ideas that you have had luck with?

Giant Belize turbo's
They are truly giant and do a wonderful job. Watch out if they start to pass on ;remove them. They can foul your water quality quickly!!!Other than that they are very much armored and mantis proof for the most part. PLUS THEY EAT CYANO!

My peacock loves astrea's. He will also eat quarter size turbo's and top crowns. Come to think about it, I've never put a snail in with him he didn't eat.

oh mine is a smaller smithii so he doesnt have the strength to smash like a peacock. what are your thoughts on the long spined urchin with my smithii?

The Belize turbo's can grow to at least 5" in diameter. The Diadema should be fine just watch out those things always seem to be gunning for my hand when I'm in the tank. It's a semi painful pric that really just makes you mad at the little guy.
It should be fine with your smithii. But not your hand:)

awsome, i picked up a small long spined urchin and hes doing good, not sure how the mantis will react because hes been hiding in his cave for the last three days, i think hes molting, but i got two thick astrea snails to attempt to clean up the rocks a bit.
