Need Protein Skimmer but no space

I have a problem. I have a new 250 gallon tank, but the stand only leaves 2 ft (exactly 24 inches) underneath. I need to purchase a protein skimmer, but all the ones that are rated for 300 gallons (250 gallon tank and 50 gallon sump) are too tall. From what I have read, the taller, the better, so what are my options? I don't mind putting the skimmer outside of the tank perhaps on the floor next to the tank if I have to. If there is a skimmer out there that would work in my sump, I would appreciate the info. I have heard of the turbo or the octopus, but have not found what I want. I also want one that works well, so I am hesitant to buy one that does not come recommended.

Any info would be appreciated.

Increased contact time is the key to a good skimmer, and while tall means more, a larger diameter means much more.

Look for a shorty with a very wide diameter; should you decide to go even larger and place the skimmer outside the tank stand, you can easily diguise it with a cabinet.

Not sure what you budget calls for but take a look at the ATI Bubble Master. It has a shorter profile and is rating to 500g.

Couldn't find the bubblemaster anywhere in the states. I will keep looking for a wide- low profile model.

Thanks

Yea, thanks $749 is a little much. I am now reading the DYI and I bought a filter in the mean time. I will have to go that route until I figure this thing out. Next i am going to get an undergravel filter (JK eeek)

Maybe someone can come up with a cheaper shorty. There are so many brands available that it is hard to keep track.

I don't know your bioload but the turboflotor is rated for a tank your size. Someone I know ran a 200+ tank on that and did fine until she started running a larger bioload. Mine was a pain breaking in but now that it is running right I really like it (mine is a HOB since I don't have a sump).

$750 for a BM250 is a bargain. You need to pay at least 2x that price for equivalent performance.

I went ahead and bought the turboflotor for $134 at Foster and Smith's. I guess we will see how it works. I have an in-line canister filter that I can use if it can not keep up. I will keep the BM250 in mind. Thanks.

I'd need some TKN, TOC data comparing it to other skimmers to accept that premise. It is a problem with skimmers. We have ton's of data on MH lights but no such comparisons on skimmers. I'm not saying you are wrong but proving your point would be very difficult without hard data.

WK is now supposed to make a plea for donations for my "All Inclusive Skimmer Study" but I'll need to ask Sanjay the costs associated with his comprehensive comparisons on MH lights.

;)

There is a German site that tested a BM250 against a $2300 Bubble King, and they were pretty close in performance. The ATI BM skimmers are BK knockoffs with Sicce threadwheel impeller pumps.

If you're into DIY, you can make an excellent skimmer using these plans by RandyStacyE.

I just finished one that came in a shade under 24" using only simple hand tools... if you like, you can check out my version HERE.

i would like to see the long term success on your canister filter.
i would agree on the bubble master. i have heard thier still working out the kinks on the 200 model. but the 250 seems very promising.

My buddy had this same problem and he came up with a DIY solution, he actually built his own protien skimmer (2 of em actually) that flank either side of his tank. They're both about 6' tall and he set them up so they look like pillars. It was kinda cool.

It might not work for everyone, but theres no reason you can't make it blend in a bit with your house surroundings. You might also be able to pipe water in and out through hoses you lay down along the floor or something, I'm working on a DIY skimmer thats going to be in my basement below my tank.
