So in my tank which is a solana 34 my pygmy angel like to hide under a large conch shell. And this worried me at first but everything seemed fine for about a month, I could always look in and see the angel hanging out under the shell. but this morning i can't see it. Turns out it has swum up into the shell, I'm assuming while chasing pods.

Now I know it is up there, question is, what do I do. I dont know if it can get back out

Tried this, but this angel has been really only interested in pods and live food, he does eat frozen, but would never come out of a hiding spot for it. I think it goes so deep into the shell because thats where the pods hide.

have you tried putting some food in the tank to lure him out?

what type of angel? some are very shy

It is a Golden Angel (Centropyge aurantia) very very shy fish, but I don't think this is regular hiding. It's original spot inside/under the conch is a blind spot in the tank. I think it is chasing pods deeper into the shell.

He defends the entrance to the conch fairly aggressively, so much so that my clown (that always attacks my hand) isn't allowed near. I noticed I couldn't find him when I saw the cleaner shrimp coming out of the shell

Oh yes, this is very normal for this fish. I have had two of these and they are almost always hiding. Though when I put a potters angle in with him, he came out a lot more. I really like this fish so when I set up my new tank I am going to try a pair. and yes mine also stayed in a cave most of the time.

Good luck
