Nead a quick reply and wanted to know what the chambers are called in a sump? also post sum pics of yours? i thikn their is surposed to be three??? Please help QUICK

Our tank has 3

refugium - holds LR and macroalgae
skimmer compartment - holds the skimmer
return compartment - contains auto-topoff and connected to pump

In our tank, one drain feeds the refugium, the other feeds the skimmer compartment. Both of those then drain into the return compartment.

You'll generally have a "bubble trap" between the skimmer compartment and return compartment. That's a series of dividers to help eliminate bubbles before they make it back into the main tank.

Don't have a pix right now but my fuge goes like this:

1 - Skimmer - maintain the water lever height
2 - Fuge section - for macro and heater
3 - Return pump - includes auto top off sensors to maintain water level consistency...

Refugiums are an area of your system that has no predators of whatever your trying to grow in your 'fuge. (i.e. 'pods, macro algae, something else) They take refuge there, hence the name, and multiply unhindered. Some people build them into their sump, but I'd say a separate one is better, that gravity feeds back into your tank to provide whatever you were growing there a return trip that isn't aided by a big return pump. (slice and dice action on the way through)

I'd recommend doing some searches on here by going to google.com and typing in:

site:reefcentral.com build refugium

or

site:reefcentral.com setup refugium

or

site:reefcentral.com sump planning

That will search only the RC site for the information you are looking for.

Pics of my DIY 15 gallon sump I have running on my 29 gallon tank:

I have 3 as well. The first chamber holds the skimmer. This so that skimmer gets all the crap water first. Then the second hold the rock and macro algea. The third is basically a bubble trap and holds the return pump.

You can see pictures on the link below. I like the style I have because I don't get salt creep as in the picture above this post.
