I just baught a ocean runner 3500 and put it in the sump but it is pumping out more than what the overflow is pulling out of the aquarium. so I need to get a new overflow that is rated 900 gph or get a pump thats rated at 600 gph. can anyone help me

thanks wes

another option would be putting a gate/ball valve on the ouput side of the pump and gating it down.

On most pumps it's fine as long as it's on the output. try doing a search for your pump with ballvalve. I'm sure you will find some hits.

You could also put a T in the return with a ball valve. Run the T back to the sump and thus not having any restriction on the pump.

How many u-tubes do you have on your overflow box? I have the same pump and my overflow only handles 600gph and I have it running wide open. But I may have more head loss than you too.

Not sure if you can tell by the picture but this is basically what sgarret1108 is talking about. This is how I have mine setup because I had a mag 12 on it before and I had to throttle it way back.

If you look at the pic the return pump is in the sump on the left, it then goes up with a T to the right with a ball valve on it then it turns back down and dumps back into the return area of the sump. The straight part of the T goes up through a ball valve (hard to see) and then through the rest of the plumbing. Ball valves are key! You'll have to tweak them both to make it work just right but once you find the sweet spot you're set. Running it this way won't put any back pressure on the pump, which is good!

thanks guys I cant believe I never thought of doing this. im going to get the parts tomorrow to do what you did Matt.

ps hows the tank coming along since the power outage?

Tanks coming along okay. I still have everything in Lori's tank. Probably for at least another week. I checked with test kits today and the nitrites are at 5 ppm and the nitrates were at 35 ppm. So it should be leveling out here in the next week I would think. Then I'm going to do like a 50 gal. waterchange and siphon as much crap as I can and retest and see what happens. I do have a few corals on some bigger rocks I couldn't get out and some of them are actually opening up and looking okay. I know I lost a few things in Lori's tank but I know where I can get replacements from so that's a plus!

You know she did mention something about a green one........if it's the one I'm thinking of you can come get another one when you get you tank running again. I'll have to start putting this stuff down in my taxes as a deduction or something......at least you have a reason for loosing it.....Jeremy just throws his in the yard
