I am thinking of switching salt brands. I have used reef crystals since I started. Thinking about seachems reefsalt. Any ideas? I need something that will keep calcium and alk at decent levels despit not adding that a whole lot of two part stuff? Ideas?

Thanks

The life in your tank uses and requires the calcium, alkalinity and magnesium as well as other chemicals to live and grow. You cannot rely on the salt mix to replenish what is taken as usage will vary. Dosing is a way of life as is testing. If you don't want to dose all the time get a calcium reactor, it will help.

I dont think I have the system for a calcium reactor nor the need. I have a 46bow. As far as stony corals go I have a purple monti cap 5-6 inches tall 2-3 inch wide two other sps frags that are not to big and then two frags of hammer 3 heads each and two frogspawn 4 heads each. I dont test a whole lot and havent for a couple months. Growth has been noticed on all sps expecialy the monti cap and a green montipora of some kind. no real groth noticed on the lps. all have looked great for the last few months. I was hoping with good water changes I wouldnt have to add that much. I have been adding seachem calcium and carbonate on a random roatating bacis. Judging from your response this is not a good idea? What does everyone suggest.

The word has been for a long time that each batch of salt varies in its calciukm and alkalinity content.

I would not buy any brand of salt and expect it to be perfect right out of the container.

When in doubt, buy 3 - 50gal bags of 3 different brands and mix them together. You should be able to get a really good consistancy.

I would do the research on it but I dont have all the test kits.
