So the only thing available local is silica, other than Caribsea?

I read some good and bad things about the southdown sand so I just went ahead and got the Caribsea instead. They're $35/40lb bag at Emerald Bay, All you need is about 5-6 bags around $200 Gimme your birds and I'll buy'em for ya!!!
ps, when are you sending the DNA testing?? I have a friend that I work with wanting to do DNA for her Blue & Gold as well, she's had it for over 10 years....let me know!!

Yea... I guess thats the only way to go, its cheaper than ordering it. I just hate spending $250 on sand.........

Sorry but I couldn't ever let go of my birds! No matter what the price!

Just asked my wife bout DNA'n, really anytime we have 2 that need checkin. Get me your sample some time next week and I'll get em sent off with mine.

I can't promise anything, but if they have Southdown in Maryland, I may be getting some next weekend. My mom and sister are visiting relatives, so I have sent them on a wild goose chase. I told them to get me 10 bags if they have it. I'll let you know if they have it and if there is extra. I only need a few 40# bags, but thought I'd ask for a few more just in case.

That would be great!
Just let me know.

I looked around the entire area in early summer and haven't seen (or even heard of) any of the stores having Southdown. I also looked in southeast PA and south Jersey when I was home visiting family. Didn't find it there either.

FWIW I used about a 50/50 mix of dry caribsea and Kolorscape sand in my upstairs tank. It's definitely silica based, but I haven't had any ill effects...

I sent them with keywords of Southdown, Yardright, Oldcastle and/or most importantly, Tropical Play Sand or Caribbean Play Sand. I'm hopeful, but a realist...

Thats exactly how I managed to get my sand. Wife went to visit relatives in PA and came back with 8 bags of sand. However, 5 months later, when I wanted some more, all the stores in PA had changed suppliers and the sand was a thing of the past.

Good luck. :)
