I have a 75G and it has an older wet/dry filter with a HOB Overflow. The sump is the typical box with the bio-balls on the one side in a "tower" effect and the return side is a shallow pool of water at about 4" depth.
I have no way of raising the water level without risking a flood when the power shuts off, but I can get a max of 5" but with evap, it is hard to keep it exact.
To this end, I am running a crappy Coralife skimmer in the sump with an airpump adding air to it to maxamize bubbles. It works, but is touchy. I have been suckered into several skimmers that I have in a box because the LFS or Online retailers tell me they will work in 4" of water. I have an Eshopps PSK-100 and a ReefOctopus 110, neither will work in less than 6" and the Ehopps requires 8-9".
I realize that I need a sump that will allow more water, but that is going to have to wait until space is available. So for now, any suggestions on a good skimmer that will run in so little water? A HOB is an options, but the last resort kind of option.
