I have decided i need a skimmer for my tank, i dont know what kind to get or what would be best for my tank. Im pretty sure i want one that hangs on the tank(so as not to take up room inside). Would it better to just do this or to add a sump to my setup and put a skimmer in there? any info or ideas is greatly appreciated. I dont mind diy so if there is a good design out there point me to it.

A sump would help and probibly be your best option a good source for info would be http://www.melevsreef.com/allmysumps.html

I would also agree that any marine system needs a skimmer. I would look at the Aqua C skimmers they are awesome. I am running an Aqua C Remora Pro with a Mag 3 on my 60. I hope this helps.

Im doing great with water changes, but i honestly dont want to keep doing a 50% water change every week. I found that if i dont do this the gunk just builds up at the surface. Everything is doing great in my tank i would just like to cut back a little bit on water change volume. I guess its time for me to get a real stand with room under it for a sump.

I used to have very cheap and easy DIY 10G sump with CSS 65 for past 20L tank. I loved it!

-used over flow box - around $20
-new 10G tank - $10
-4-5 plexi plastic sheet (need cutting) - around $15 - 20 at HomeDepot
-small silicon tube - less than $5 at HomeDepot
-CSS - $80 including shipping.

I like the website posted, i have heard that name before, is he a local guy? seems his sumps would be pretty pricey but it might be worth it for me. I honestly have been thinking of a sump, but i saw a much simpler design somewhere else. I like the ones on the link posted though, if i were to put a cover on the sump it would limit condensation to a point right? I have heard that with a sump you lose a lot more water due to more exposure. If anyone can point in the direction of a nice skimmer that would also be great. I will probably be looking at spending anywhere between $100-200 for a skimmer(new or used) i know its not that much but its only for a little 20L.

Hello
I have a 3"x16" hang on air stone skimmer to sell, you'll need to add a small feed pump (AS 404) and a air pump. $60.00

have any pics? and would it work on a 12" tall tank?

hey bro, i use that CPR bakpak 2 skimmer that i got used from jeni... that thing is AMAZING. Pulls out the nastiest green sludge out of the tank. Get one! :)

I know what you use i will soon know where you live and then......................i will take that ps3:strooper:

NEVER! Im guarding that thing with my girlfriends life. Yeah, i said it.

pS: the only drawback to the bakpak is that the bubble collector box takes up a LOT of room in the tank

you just said that.................you better not let me talk to her again or i will tell on you. It will be fun seeing you run :p
