Hey Everyone,

A couple quick questions I could use help with! My tank is almost 2 months old, so it's just really starting to come together.

Question 1:

I'm worried about 2 of my fish. A Brazilian Royal Gramma and a Purple Dottyback. They have some small white spots on them--see below. The Royal Gramma also will rub itself on the sand. I'm assuming it's Ich, but thought I'd ask.

<a href="http://s27.photobucket.com/albums/c178/zachslow/?action=view&current=brazilian1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c178/zachslow/brazilian1.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

<a href="http://s27.photobucket.com/albums/c178/zachslow/?action=view&current=dottyback2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c178/zachslow/dottyback2.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

<a href="http://s27.photobucket.com/albums/c178/zachslow/?action=view&current=dottyback.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c178/zachslow/dottyback.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

If it is Ich, can anyone recommend the best ways to deal with it? Also, I don't have a quarantine tank--so that's a factor too.

Question 2:

I feel like I have a good amount of coraline algae beginning to grow. But I also feel like I'm getting a ton of green algae. Seems like too much too me, and it's a pain to clean tank so often.

<a href="http://s27.photobucket.com/albums/c178/zachslow/?action=view&current=coraline.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c178/zachslow/coraline.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

It's even on my sand:
<a href="http://s27.photobucket.com/albums/c178/zachslow/?action=view&current=sandalgae.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c178/zachslow/sandalgae.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

A full tank shot. Seems really green to me:
<a href="http://s27.photobucket.com/albums/c178/zachslow/?action=view&current=fulltank.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c178/zachslow/fulltank.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Anyone have any thoughts on this? I'm open to any suggestions. I listed my parameters below.

Question 3:

My sump seems to have some sort of red algae growing in it. It will bubble a bit if i don't clean it regularly.

<a href="http://s27.photobucket.com/albums/c178/zachslow/?action=view&current=sumpalgae.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c178/zachslow/sumpalgae.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

<a href="http://s27.photobucket.com/albums/c178/zachslow/?action=view&current=redalgae.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c178/zachslow/redalgae.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Any thoughts on what this is? And how I can fix it?

Here are my water parameters--I only use RO/ID water:
Temp: 79
KH: 9
CA: 450
Nitrates: 5
PH: 8.3
Phosphate: 0
Salinity: 1.025

Thanks a lot! I trust all of you much more than my LFS :)

Yes, it's ich and the gramma probably won't make it. To have chance you need to QT them and treat with either Copper or hypo-salinity. Both treatments will kill your coral and inverts in the main tank.

The stuff in the sump is cryno bacteria. You have a high nutrient level in the tank. Also do you run the sump light 24hrs or 12?

the green algae and cryno are probably both caused by the same thing. What's your water source? What do you feed? How often?

Do I need to worry about getting the Gramma and Purple Dottyback infecting all of my other fish? Should i get them out asap?

I feed with Rod's food once a day (about the size of a nickel) and 1-2 caps a day of PhytoFeast.

Water source is RO/DI water. The sump light is on 24/7.

Thanks for the input everyone!

I bought a 10 gallon QT tank today which now has all of my fish in it. Before I put them in there I did a 5 minute fresh water dip with Formalin 3.

I bought a Fluval 1 filter for the tank, and a heater. I'm assuming I'll need an airstone, which I'll buy in the morning.

I dosed the water with Mardel Coppersafe. And I plan on slowly lowering the salinity to 1.009 over the next two days. I'll keep all the fish in here for a month.

Does this all seem like a good approach? I've attached a pict. I've never had a QT tank before, so can anyone recommend how often I should do water changes? Will I need to vaccum the bottom? Will nitrates skyrocket?

Thanks! Pict below:

um... how many fish are in there? I would worry about it being so tightly packed. maybe get a few more 10g tanks and keep 2-3 fish in each?

a purple dottyback, 2 brazilian royal grammas, 1 coral beauty, 2 orange fire fish, 1 purple fire fish, 1 rose scale wrasse, 2 clown fish

they are fine in there. now leave them in there for 8 weeks to kill the ich in the main tank. it will die without a host. one month is not enough. it will take 6 weeks minimum and well, 2 more weeks is nothing, trust me. we have all dealt with this and patience is key.

i atually use hypo and copper. i use copper power brand and it is very mild, you can easily double the doseage and not kill your fish. this may be something to look into.

and put garlic in your food. that will help boost their immune system. many people use this to help with very mild outbreaks in their main tank so they dont have to tear everything apart to get a fish out.

Do not do hypo and copper at the same time. do them in sequence not parallel. If your going to use copper get a copper test kit.

cut down the phyto to two to three times a week.

When I changed my fuges light cycle to be 12 hours instead of 24 the cryno I had went away.

oh, and how would you suggest going about adding garlic? any specific techniques that people use?

Buy the pre bottled liquid Kent Garlic Extreme, and soak your food in it for a few mins before feeding the fish.

how often do you do water changes in your QT tank? seems like the nitrates in there are going to skyrocket.

Because everything is new in your QT tank it will most likely cycle. You need to test and monitor your ammonia, and nitrites. Fish dont really care about nitrates that much. Mostly corals care about nitrates. When any of the levels start to rise, do a water change.

I agree 100%. I would keep some prime on hand to deal with your ammonia spike. I would also bring the sg down a lot faster. Maybe 24hrs. If the ich is bad it could kill your fish in a couple days. JMO

Good luck with the QT. Six to eight weeks will actually pass quickly and it will give your tank time to properly re-establish itself. When its time to add the fish back into the display do it slowly. Just add one or two at a time and allow a few days before adding the next ones. Start with the most peaceful fish first and the most agressive last. You have a lot of fish for a two month old tank. You can try adding some large mexican turbo snails and emerald crabs now to control some of the algae. Maybe 4 or 5 of each. They won't be affected by the ich. Feed your tank some flake food every few days to help it cycle, and keep up with the water changes. Your going to be busy over the next couple of months so good luck. And remember, in this hobby going slow is a good thing.

Did you add 10 fish all at once? At 2 months, I would have started with 1 or 2 and gradually added more over time.
