Need Some Encouragement from Large Tank Owners!!!!!!!

Do any of you NOT have a fish room? Or otherwise fancy plumbing coming from your setup through walls?

Are any of you manually adding top off water?

I am putting my tank up against an exterior wall, so there's no chance of plumbing a drain and top off setup through a wall.

I know this sounds silly, but I have not seen ANY 240+ gallon tanks that were super low tech. Is that because everybody gets burned out doing it the way I will have to do it and downsizes?

Please give me hope! I really want an 8x2x2 tank! (but I may have to settle for a 6' sub-200-gallon tank.)

It is just about maintenance. If it isn't easy, eventually you won't do it and you'll just have a BIGGER problem on your hands. As everything gets bigger to support the bigger tank, it just leads to more space and fish rooms....its just inevitable.

untamed, you got that right. im planning on a 180 gal display with a fishroom connecting to it. 75 gal sump on it. 125 gal frag tank in the fish room. and multiple breeder tanks in the future

I dont! I have a 260G in the process with a 75G sump that I am trying to keep very open to fit some of my equipment. I do have storage space to both sides that are pretty well hidden but no fishroom. What kind of space are you dealing with?

It's basically a big, open room, and I can't hide anything behind it or to the sides of it. It all needs to be within the stand.

I will have my water change water and topoff water in the laundry room. I'll have to wheel it around the house to get to the tank. :)

Is basement an option? Or no basements in Z-hills?

p.s. my Bro used to skydive there

Yea, how about that idea? How far is the laundry room?

I understand...that's why I had to wait until I bought a new house before I could build my dream tank.

I'm not saying that it can't be done...just that extra space makes things much easier.

Think about how much FW you need to store. How large SW batches you want to mix. How you are going to execute water changes. What lights are you going to use and how are you going to move them out of the way to work in the tank?

Stuff like that.

As the crow flies, the laundry room is about 30 feet. But I have to come out of the laundry room, go through the kitchen, then turn back to the tank against the exterior wall. Kinda hard to explain. Our kitchen is completely enclosed, so you have to pass through it to get anywhere. The laundry room is at the opposite end of the kitchen.

Cutting through any floors or walls is not going to be an option (going to the basement). We do have a basement, technically. It's actually ground level with sliding glass doors. We live on the Hills. River.

(and if I did go through the floor straight below the tank, I'd be putting equipment directly in front of a sliding glass door. Actually, between a door and a pool table. Not good.

I have a 225 set up in the corner of my house. Currently everything is under my stand, but i am relocating my 3 ballasts and my UPS outside. I am going to put them in a ventilated deck box. I will run the wires through the wall and stand in a piece of 2 inch pvc pipe.

The thing is having a fishtank is about enjoyment. When you have a large tank and you don't have a fishroom to automate a lot of the processes a large tank turns into work, and is not enjoyable after you get over the initial euphoria.

Its totally doable without a fishroom. Its just not as much fun imho.

First of all, you CAN setup a very solid filtration system in a stand that size. You'll have to do some custom building of your filtration components but it most definitely can be done. I would recommend getting or making a stand that is 30" + tall to give yourself room for taller skimmers, reactors and have an acrylic sump made custom to make the most out of your stand. I can help you design one based on some that I have built if you'd like.

As far as it not being as fun, I tend to disagree :-) I think the challenge of designing and building a top notch system with limited space is fun...I'm currently doing it with a 58 gallon setup. My last tank was a 240 with remote filtration so it's definitely different.

Well your water changes should be easy since the replacement water is on wheels..Just get a nice submersible pump to add the replacement water back into the tank...not much manual labor there.
