ok this is what i would like to do and was wondering the best way to do it with out messing my system up. my big reef tank has been up for a year now. I am sick of the rock work and would like to rearrange it. How can I do this with out making a huge mess and with out messing with the water quality? another reason is I would like to get rid of a few fish while I am doing this.

shouldnt be an issue. the muck that get stirred up will most likly only be an issue as it will clog up foam filters ..ect. should really cause a quick water quality issue as your not adding anything but stirring up whats been there thus your water quality should stay at whatever it was prior to the activity...if not slightly spiking levels but nothing drastic imo. i would just change all foam filters a few hours after operation. i shy away from a water change cause your already stressing the stock but im sure its plausable. i would jjust add a foam filter for the rock rearangment if you already have one then just clean it before and after the task. basically the cloady mess is inevitable but shouldnt be of any issue to the stock. corals may need a blow off of debri after and i would remove sponges (if you have any colorful expensive purchased ones) and just bag float them during this so they dont get clogged up from the excces stuff. good luck

I run a sump. no filter. I am always blowing off the debris witha turkey baster before I do a water change. I want to have more room for my fish and to be able to get more water flow behind the rock. I have over 250 of live rock in this tank . by the way where have you been. I miss you. call me so we can catch up . i also have a few questions to ask you

okay shouldnt be an issue if you just do what you normally do..just dont panic about the claody muck that occurs. it will clear and then just so you feel better test your water after just to be sure. ive been around....working at union more regularly and more often also , and i still work with the state so i stay busy. ill call ya over the next few days so we can catch up.

yeah I would like to get the rock so that it is two giants mounds con each side. I have it now as a slope from the back down to the front, it just leaves no room for my tangs to swim. my naso is getting huge.

yeah i also am not a fan of that aqua scape design . i always use the two mounds on each side. my current reef has enough space for a middle obsticle as this creates a illusion of being in a defferent tank to the fish (cant see both sides). but i do like to leave an open area in all my tanks now. aquascaping has come a ling way so do some research and youll find some nice techniques and styles.

Just transfer the rock to a rubbermaid or buckets with water (somewhat warm). Do a water change a little after- shouldn't be a big deal. If moving corals and it will take a little while until they are in the tank, then put in with circulation and a heater (depending on house temp).

I often re-aquascape. I syphon off my tank water to a rubbermaid tote as Michael said. I have my water change standing by all mixed and upto temp. Put the corals & LR into the tote or totes as it sometimes takes. Use a powerhead and dust them off before adding back to the display.

Presto;) Gorgeous tank!.. :fish2:

I also changed my rock set up. I have 175Lb of Lr in a 55. It was the typical wall. Now I have a large pile on each side with a clearing in the middle(nice spot for my gargonia). This gave my a much bettter illusion of depth in the tank. Just my 2 cents. -mike.

yes I have to realize that my fish need more room to swim and I am sick of the wall look. I would like to get more water flow all over the tank. thanks for your feed back everyone

I usualy tend to do this sort of thing in sections. 1/2 a tank at a time. IF you disturb too much of the biological stability, you will be headded for a crash, OR nitrates will spike with all the new nutrients that are re-released into the water collumn due to messing with the sediment. Best bet is to slowly go section by section with a gravel siphon and a diatom filter, and pull out all the mulm and detritus and collect it in a .02 micron bag OR a super shop vac that has a recycling tank (rare and expensive, but leaseable from those flood cleanup people or a pool man) as it basicly is a giant canister filter made into a vaccum with a super fine particle collection bag.

While doing this, the easiest way to catch fish is when you have a large section opened without rockwork, chase the fish into it, and use a large tupperware container or collander and catch them against the glass, and slide up to the surface and then remove.

HTH, good luck :)

and your Hubby is 1/2 right.... if done wrong, his THISNKSING about it being a Big mess is korrekt...... ;)

my problem is the way the rock work is set up. it is an incline from the back to the front with tons of growth on the rocks. The only good thing I can think of doing is a good size water change when I am done and run a wet skim for a few days? maybe grab a bottle of turbo start when I am done. I will have a few fish that will need a good home. I have hated this one fish for three years now. it is pay back time. no more beating the fish with a stick I am shipping his *** off to eddies, by the way where could I get one of those things you mentioned? I think I am just going to pump my husband up with some Xanex and jack daniels and tell him I know what I am doing?
