need some help

I want to be as detailed as possible so i can get some solutions to whats going on in my tank. I am taking my water in to get it tested tomorrow because I do not trust my ability to test accuratly anymore.

Ok, so i was having a red slime issue, i eventually discovered it was phosphates (i tend to overfeed because I have a few fish that need a little weight on them). I got a sandsifting goby, a phosphate/carbon reactor, and added algone pads to the sump (remove nutrients) I already have a small fuge with chaeto and a skimmer. Things were looking great, corals bright, large, and no more slime. It went well for 3-4weeks then i started to get a little growth of slime again so i changed my gfo/carbon, my algone was getting changed weekly, and did a 10gal water change (55gal tank). slime went away all was good. I ran out of algone pads and just kinda let it be because they were expensive and never intended to be a long term solution. kept them out things were fine. slime stayed away for several weeks again. then i started to notice my lps (galexia and 2 frogspawn) retracting, had just a hint of slime but thought i would not take a chance and changed my gfo/carbon and did a 20gal water change. so it has been 4 days since the waterchange and the lps are still retracted. zoos seem ok and mushroom looks great. my 1 sps shows no sign of issue, in fact it looks better than ever. I know gfo can irritate some fish but it has been in there for 2 months! if it was a nutrient issue my sps and zoos would be showing signs of issue too. I anticipate that the water test will show low nutrient levels, any ideas anyone? I am painfully looking for some more stability!

Well, how about starting with current stats? That is kind of important to know. Do you use an ATO or top off manually? Are you using tap water or RO/DI? WHat does the "slime" look like? Is it long and fibrous, or is it velvety and when you pull it out it comes up in sheets?

It could be that when you changed out the GFO, maybe some of it spilled/got out of your reactor so that it wouldn't matter how long it had been.

There are lots of other possibilities, too. Sometimes it seems like some corals just retract for a bit for no apparent reason and then come back out a little while later.

If they're just retracted, I would personally wait a few more days and see what happens. 4 days isn't too terribly long.

You should definitely check your current parameters. Also, maybe carbon dosing would be a good alternative to your GFO, especially if its irritating your corals or anything else (assuming only that it MAY be).

Hope this helps!

well, got the parms checked, only thing of interest was phosphates at .5, everything else was right where i wanted it. could that be it? Would a tempature spike cause lps to react in a bad way and sps not to react? That is all i could think of. before we finally turned the a/c on today and my wife said she checked when i was at work and it had spiked to 86! it normally runs 78-80. What else can i do to rid phosphates besides gfo and fuge with cheato? Shouldnt my phosphates be around .25 or less? should i just wait longer for them to pop back out?

Andy: i use a auto top off with rodi and the slime is cyano, i should have been more specific, sorry

86 degrees could have killed everything If left for any length of time, That being said definitely could have stressed your corals. I would not let the tank get that hot again and hope all recovers In time. If I hit 82-84 I'm taking action to get It cooled down fast!!

86 degrees can cause corals to get unhappy, especially if they are used to 80 degrees.

As far as the Cyano goes, it is actually not an algea. Use Chemi-clean and it will take care of it. For Phosphates, don;t over feed your tank, and what GFO are you using? If phosphate was down and went up, then time to change the GFO.

Also, watch your carbon. Letting that run too long can cause you to spike as well.
