Need tips and ideas how to find a rare eel

Shh Lets Not talk Cost!
I am officially through the cycle on my 40 breeder. Once again this will be a species specific tank for an eel. I'm wanting either 2 or 3 GDMs or if it can be pulled off..... 1 chestnut moray and 2 GDMs. what I mean by pulled off is actually locating a chestnut that is for sale or by monetary persuasion to get one that someone has already but did not know they were willing to sell.

Any pointers to online sources that have them or can get them would be excellent. If you know of anyone who has one that may consider selling it for the right price, please PM me with their contact info or if you are not sure what they would think of you giving me contact info I will give you mine to pass along. Thanks in advance for any help.

Try e-bay for the GDMs, there's a diver from Hawaii that sells them. I've been looking for a chestnut moray for the past two years and havent found one yet, tried diver tom and cramers critters and neither have seen them. I'm thinking about having my LFS order an assorted eel to see what I get.

I swear as soon as I typed the first post one of the LFS I do a weekly run to (3 hr round trip) sent me an email that he has a vendor who has 2 of them.... I emailed back to get price(s) and asked him to order them both and I would be there with cash in the morning.

How weird is that??? I just hope someone else don't get their order in 1st...

pr12: I have thought about doing the assorted route as well but I am the one guy that would end up with a dinosaur sized random creature that hardly resembles an eel.
haha

Sorry, i forgot something, how did you find the GDMs on ebay? Through the diver's store or is it an auction? And Thank you pr12 for the pointer

Turns out it was Quality marine and they do have Gymnothorax castaneus, Chestnut moray. Unfortunately I am looking for the smaller one, Enchelycore carychoa also know as "chestnut moray".

So the search goes on lol

I beleive it was an auction, I found them by searching live eel. You may also try searching for caribbean chestnut eel. Good luck!

Thanks I recived a link to the diver on ebay and his site via PM. I tried to search for the caribbean chestnut eel on ebay and all that came up was boots and purses made from them.... bummer. I do thank you for your time though.

Sorry I almost forgot about this thread.

phill21: I honestly am willing to spend what ever the eel costs. I have the theory that this is my hobby and it keeps me happy. The cost of my hobby is no issue as long as I don't think about the money I have invested in it. :mixed:
Just do not tell my family how much it costs and I should be out of harms way lol

Funny...we figure it the same way.

Good luck finding the eel. Will keep an eye out.

I find that my LFS takes requests and some go very far out of their way to help. I've been quoted on GDM's for 120/each and I can pick up before they go into the LFS tank so they only acclimate once. Best of luck.

A little update on my success. I found the eels I was looking for. I'm just waiting for some details on my end to be sorted out. I will either add to this thread or begin a new one when I receive my little treasures! Thank you all for your contribution to this thread.

Well if that's your answer then foot reef hotspot.coom and call them up personally and offer them 750-800 for japanese dragon moray I was going to buy it myself but I got a smaller one from Lfs for 700 so I took it

Good luck hunting

phill21: Thank you for that tip as well. I'm actually looking for the more rare in the hobby species as the E. pardalis is a stunningly beautiful species it is quite commonly available. I would love to find the following; E. bayeri, G. herrei, G. zonipectus, G. enigmaticus. Once I acquire a chiller I would like to find a G. kidako. But with my new finds coming in I will have to set up more tanks (replenish my funds).
