Need to breed.

I am in need of cash to save up for the L46 (freshwater catfish) as I live in New Zealand, I have had a look at the NZ market, one fish that is popular but hardy to find is the

baggani cardinal

Would I be able to breed them in a 10gal aquarium?

I have heard of people doing them in 20 gallons. I think that if you provide enough cover, you may be able to get away with it.

I am a long-time breeder of clowns and cardinals (and others) but am new to RC. You can easily breed wild caught Banggais in a 10 gallon tank, particularly if they are the only fish in the tank. Once you get the babies you can get them to breed a second generation in a 5 gallon at less than 7 months of age! The trick is to put them under low light and have a regular photoperiod (use a timer to control the lights). A small longspined (Diademia?) urchin is of much help to protect the fry. They also seem to favour a dense stand of feather caulerpa... I should mention that my tanks are all plumbed in-line with a 500 gallon system. But if you can do water changes from your biggest tank you may have similar success. Good luck. Banggais are the easiest to breed and rear of all the marine fishes I have had success with.

You'll want to have a 2nd tank to rear baby bangaii's in...otherwise they'll end up as food for the parents ultimately.

good point matt! the long-spined unchins will buy you some time but after siphoning them from between their spines you will need a breeder basket or preferably their own tank...

Boy did you all miss the obvious on this one  clown_reefer wants to EARN cash, not spend it

c_r, breeding is probably NOT the quickest way to paying for a rare catfish, a job at McDonalds will get you there a LOT faster :D

Ha, Ha, David, You got that right! The money you spend on getting this marine thing right, you could just pay whatever they want for that L46. How much do they want for that L46, any7way?

I have all the contacts. Equipment/Livestock all at cost!

Here is what I was thinking...

(1) 10gal tank (10 LBS or LR, 5 LBS of LS)
(1) 7 gal tank (7 LBS of LR, 3 LBS of LS)
(2) 5gal tank (joined) (10LBS of LR, 5 LBS of LS)
(3) 100 watt heater
(3) H200 Filters

I will have me adults in 10gal tank, then after the first spawn move them to the 2x5gal tanks to rear them, then tank two and place them into the 7gal to try to get another pair. After first batch has been sold, I will get a bunch of other rearing tanks.

I am going for natural filtration.

Grow organically, make minimal outlay of your own personal capital. Worked very well in past businesses I've run.

Good luck,

Matt
