I use a piece of carbon fiber rod (maybe something like a toothpick or a skewer) to slowly pry up on the foot in just one spot at first, then once you've gotten part of the foot off, just kinda keep working on it and it will start to peel right off.

I don't think you have a bta, although it seems to have bulbs. It looks suspiciously like a starving sebae (H. crispa). We got one that looked a lot like that, but much whiter. The care for this type is a little different than for bta's, for example placement and lighting. I would get some more opinions on what kind it is, and make sure it's something you can take care of, if you can't take care of it, or it's not one you want you have the option of taking it back.

As far as removing it, ours moved when there was a lot of flow directed at it's foot. It didn't like it. I've also seen people suggest using ice around the foot to get it to let go. I like the method that allows the nem to move on its own. I would be afraid to pry it off, or use a sharp instrument to get they prying started, I wouldn't want to risk damaging the foot, that would be another issue that you will have to deal with in getting this guy healthy.

Good luck!

yeh im pretty possitive its not a sebae cos im in Aus and ive rarely seen nems other then bubble tips in our shops.

why do you think its starving? those green tips to the droopy tenticles are an injury it got in the transport process, being in the bag with that ornament and a piece of live rock in another bag the two must have bumped together.... it eats fine, mouth is tight, good colour for bubble tips here, im pretty sure its a pretty healthy bta.

yeh id prefer it to move on its own too.

Is he in too tight to use your fingers? On something like an artificial surface, I always use my fingers to gently work an anemone loose. Start gently at the base and slowly peel a section free and work your fingers underneath. Don't try this method with a 2' H. magnifica in the wild :) Every time I would peel a section loose, it would reattach before I could loosen another side :)

BTW - I am almost 100% confident you have a BTA (E. quadricolor).

It just looks a lot like my crispa when we got it. White/cream short, stubby, rounded tentacles with purple dots on the tips.

The starving comment came with the idea that it could be a crispa. Since crispa's have long tentacles, when they are starving they shrink and look a lot like the one in your picture.

The tentacles on my nem also shrivel and get a greenish hue when they have come into contact with something.

I'm still new at the bta stuff, but I thought the most common colors were rose and green, so a beige one made me wonder as well. I'll have to see if I can figure out how to post pics, I can show you ours, and you'll be able to see why this one made me wonder.

Good luck with moving it, that always scares me :)

yeh raoul - i thought you were thinking exactly what u said!

ive never seen a rose one in aus, and greens are pretty boring browny olive colour so i was stoked to find this little beige one with the purple tips.

now i just gotta get this guy out too!!! he looks a bit big for the bta!

Holy cow! That thing is scary!! I'm going to try to get to those pics today and see if I have a good one, the resemblance is uncanny! I suppose I should be glad the LFS didn't try to sell mine as a bta, I would have killed it for sure!

I'm bummed...

I looked through my pics, but I didn't start taking any pics of it until about a month after we got it, and by that time it was getting good lighting and regular feedings so the tentacles started lengthening.

Sorry...

lol....

dude that thing is like identicle! hahaha i can see what ur on about now....

thanks anyways

You can also use an ice cube to make the foot start to come off. Just take it out of the tank and gently rub the cube along the foot and rock in one section. It will slowly let go and continue to work your way under the anemone.

cheers for that, got to get the ornament back to the shop by saturday so if he aint gone on his own the ice cube it is!

your purple tip looks like one of the Condylactis species to me also. I do not think he is a BTA. As for moving him point a powerhead at his foot and he should move. Good luck with it.

I have done this several times with mine.

Just point a powerhead at the foot on one side. When it starts to move, put your hand or a rock on the side in the direction it is moving. It will move right onto your hand. Then you can put it wherever you want.
Like I said, I have done this several times and it always worked with minimal stress to the nem.
