Need to house my Maroon for a while...

Simply Complicated
Will there be any major problems with housing my Maroon Clown in a 12g Nano?
I'm going to try to rework my tank she is in right now and it may take a while.
She is about 5" long and will be the only fish in the tank.

How long? Are we talking a while as in days or weeks?

I would think that's pretty tight quarters for her...

I'd like it to be her permanent home but I know better than that. She's EXTREMELY mean and kills everything I try to put into her tank.
I'm thinking at least a week or maybe two if things drag out with the other tank. I'm going to tare it down, clean and rework the rocks, add a few other fish and then try to see if see will get along with others.

Not a plan with historically high rates of success.

A female maroon will claim her spot, she gets to decide how big, and where. If yours has historically claimed a large space, expect that to continue regardless of the decor.

You are likely better off finding her a new home, preferably 25gal or larger.

Mine claimed 150 gal as her area - the only safe fish were the ones that there before she was put in the tank.

Allie, I feel your pain. My female maroon used to bite me and draw blood. I finally traded her in at the LFS, and she was returned two more times.

IMHO, a 12 gallon nano is far from ideal, but if we're talking just a few days or a week, ok, you could probably get by with it. Where are you storing your LR when you clean the tank out? When I swapped out tanks, I kept my LR in a couple of 30 gallon rubbermaid tubs filled with tank water and a powerhead, and I put my fish in with the rock. Could you get a rubbermaid? I think mine only cost about $6 at Wally World. It doesn't have to be pretty.

But I agree, you will probably have to get rid of her. If you do try your plan, be prepared to rip everything apart and take her out.

Tanks for your input everyone. I was afraid that she still might try to claim the tank back even with a change in rock & fish. I'm going to give it a try and maybe she wont just kill everything immeiately. I know that sounds bad but I'm changing the tank into a FO tank. I've been at this for years now and never been able to keep anything but her and a goby in there which I don't think she can get to it.
I do put the LR in a large tub with pumps and heaters but I never thought about putting her in there too Les. That's a great idea. I would get rid of her except she was my first fish and she's made it thru my learning curve, crashes, boiling and freezing. I ust can't bring myself to part with her.

So my next question is what type of fish will have the best chance to survive her wrath? I'd like to get at least one or two fish.

Have you considered a small GSM to see if they will pair? If that works, she may be too busy with her guy friend to kill other newcomers. On the other hand it could backfire and she could get even meaner trying to protect her mate.....

That has crossed my mind and I've been on the hunt for over a year. No can kind one or I would have tried it already. I am afraid that she wold just tare it apart in the first 5 minutes like she did the Flame Angle, Tang, 6 line Wrasse, ect ect.

I don't want to get anything that will hurt her because she has no marks on her. Foxface will get to big to fast but if it would solve her attitude I might consider it.

Well Allie, I'm reticent to make any fish recommendations based on your clown's violent past, but if you do try something, I'd make sure it was an aggressive fish that I'd introduce to the tank before adding the clown back in.

If you are looking for an somewhat aggressive tankmate, consider the Neon dottyback (Pseudochromis aldabraensis)--a very colorful little fish with quite a nasty disposition that should be able to hold its own. Mine is pretty mild-mannered in my tank, but if a tang tries to give him attitude, he holds his own.

They are a pretty and colorful fish:

Another possibility is a dwarf lion since you're going to FOWLR. This might be a better choice since she's probably not as likely to go after something with venomous spines. :D

Some information on pairing a maroon is here:

Most successful "trick" is the plastic bug box. Meaning float the mini Maroon, and we mean mini in the box. Let the female get to know it a bit before release. As long as the little one submits, it should be over fast...maybe a bit scary, but over quickly.

Any fish you want in the tank, needs to go back in before her. The exception to that rule, the clown should be introduced after her following the pairing plan.

Good luck and fwiw: a 30gal is not much room for a 5" clown and other fish...might want to start planning the next big tank :)

I really like that fish Les. So small and nasty are the best chance I've got to make this work. At least maybe they can hide long enough to catch thier breath. Not going to go there on the lion fish. I still use my hands to do everyting in a tank and transferr the fish and critters by hand too.

I checked out some of the arcived links first about pairing with another species. I don;t think she'll go for it and no need to sacrifce a fish just to give it a shot. If I could find another maroon I would do that in a heartbeat.

I know it's small but I'm not going to get a bigger tank if I can't find a fish for her to get along with. I've got 3 already and the next one will be the last one. If they take over any size tank I'd rather just stay small.

What? Feeding a lionfish by hand and petting them is so much fun! Don't ask me how I know this. :D

Well, I do like the idea of getting her a b/f best of all...and of course, you could always just get a bigger tank and leave the maroon in the 30.
