what is the trick to get zoas to grow and spred fast. I herd iodine is one way is this true. What do I need to do to get these guys to spred? I have a 25 gal nano and a 130 gal tank.

lights! lights are a key and i dont mean pc's. had those they grow ok. thing i doubled my growth rate when i switch to mh and soem t5's, now they grow like crazy.

I would say no on the iodine. Lighting, flow, and a proper ALK, Calcium, Mag balance along with feeding your tank is all you need to make zoanthids grow like crazy.

I agree % 100 with you guys on the iodine. I would never even consider dosing iodine without a very reliable test kit. Even then you won't get an exact reading on Iodate. If you iodine concentration exceeds 0.06 NSW, ( Natural Seawater) you are placing your system in grave danger of an iodine overdose. The results would be exceeding this level.

Years ago, I use to max out a tank with just good lighting and current. I mean long ago, I didn't even feed. Today, as stated above, good lighting ( good PAR levels) , very good current, preferably variable, and near stable levels as stated above and you're good to go. Feeding is just an added benefit.

If just starting out a tank, one can never expect to get excellent growth from the jump. An aged system, and I speak from my own experience and a few friends of mine, will yield much better growth.

BTW, I periodically add iodine via Reef Plus, but be sure to know your iodine update daily if you are going to ever use Lugols directly.

I have an absurd amount of polyps and my Iodide requirement seems to be much higher and things suffer if they are below 0.10mg/l. I do not know the exact science in keeping raised iodide levels but it has worked great for certain polyps.
With a new tank I would not worry about the levels as regular water changes will compensate and your coral load is not at peak.

It would be an interesting thread on the iodide/iodine supplement as well.
good luck and happy reefing

REALLY? What kind of test kits do you use? I've heard of 0.08 or 9, but 0.10mg/I? Man that is pushing it. I've seen negative result in my tank at 0.08 . Pheeew , you go Geo !!! I've seen Elegance corals crash at 0.10 man, LOL

Seachem test kit. Lets start a new thread on Iodide levels and whom checks and what they keep at it ?? I thought NSW was closer 0.08mg/l ? Do you remember what your TOTM iodide level was? I bet it was higher than what you keep it now?? Interested in knowing
