Need to take out BTA: What will Maroon do?

My BTA is getting too large now for my 38 gal. I need to either take it out or take out a lot of other stuff that I really like. I bought a maroon clown a few months ago that has hosted it the whole time. It's very defensive if I mess around by it's home. What can I expect the clown to do once the BTA is gone?

Hmmm... once when I was upgrading tanks i had to remove the rock the BTA was on and the maroon stayed on the anemone out of the water
Does that help?
I think you'll be causing your fish a lot of stress but she'll find something else to hang out on in your tank & probably be fine. Maybe you could trade the big anemone in on a slightly smaller one?

That tells you a lot :D

I had a GBTA that died and about a week later the clown brokw out with ICK and died.

Don't know if he was heart broken or what (poor little guy) :(

Good Luck

Obviously there may have been other factors - but it is unbelievably stressful for them to lose their safe haven - without it in the ocean they'd get eaten And in case there is someone reading who doesn't understand the stress issue, basically stress=disease

jerehmy, sorry about your fish :(

My anemone was walking around for awhile... I had to take the maroon out for a QT secion and when It went back in the anemone was in a different spot. My maroon went right to the old spot and hung out looking confused. when it re fond the bta, it was still going back and looking for the other one.

I think it will look a little lonley.. but clowns do fine with or without one.

I would try to trade for a smaller one, or try to force a split by feeding more and stuff....

From what I understand, maroons are the worst about needing a host anemone. I know some one who put a maroon in the tank w/o a BTA and it almost starved to death. As soon as it was back near a BTA at the LFS it started eating again. Right away. He has been fine ever since. I know because I bought him.

I agree with everyone else, I would try to get a smaller one for the maroon clown. I have 2 Maroon clowns and could not think of taking away their BTA's.
