I just walked in the door and my wife said that my blue tang is acting really weird. she said she noticed it when she heard splashing and then he would fly around the tank at super high speeds ramming his head into the live rock and glass and breathing really heavily. My salinity/gravity is good, no nitrates, nada, but I just had a yellow tang die in exactly the same way. Does anyone have any clues or suggestions?

What! Wow check your power cords and make sure none of the went dead or blew. Be carefull, check for broken heater in tank. Inspect every bit of wiring you have and carfully!!!!!!!

Try and keep the light sdim for the Tang as Blue tangs are scardy cats and this will help calm down.

Keep us updated.

I had a yellow tang once that darted frantically around the tank like that. At first I thought it could see a reflection of itself & was fighting itself, but then I saw small white dots appear.

I moved him to a QT tank, but he ended up dying from Oodinium. If you've added anything live to the tank in the last month, I would be watching for signs of an external parasite.

How long have you had this fish? Did you quarantine it?
How long did you have your Yellow Tang and when did it die? Did the Yellow have any visible spots? Erratic swimming, flashing and heavy breathing are all signs of parasites and since you are dealing with Tangs, its very likely the cause
Now if your Yellow was new, died quickly and had these symptoms, it could be marine velvet. Marine velvet kills quickly, often by the time the fish shows visible signs it is too late as the parasite attacks the gills first. If there are visible signs, it will appear the fish has a 'Dusting' of white, gold or grey. This dusting is sometimes hard to see..If it is indeed Velvet, you would need to act fast. Moving the fish to a qt and treating with copper.
Ich is not as deadly as Velvet and is easier to cure. Fish will flash, twitch, dart around , sometimes they breath heavy and some fish will hide. Within a few days you will see spots like salt. This is easily treated [if caught early] with Hyposalinity or copper.
Do watch your fish, be prepared to move him to qt if he continues this behavior
