Needing advice regarding a hang on skimmer

So it’s nonsense, but in your sig you run a skimmer? Give me a break! Of course a tank can be managed without a skimmer, done it many times, but to suggest it to a newbie is irresponsible to the poster and the live stock.

Its not irresponsible at all..
A skimmer is 100% an "optional" piece of equipment as you have said yourself..
It can help reduce maintenance requirements by helping to remove organic compounds from the tank before they break down into ammonia/nitrates but it is absolutely not a mandatory piece of equipment. Many tanks actually do better without one...

Given the choice of not running a skimmer or removing structural bracing from the tank not running a skimmer wins every time as the better move..

That piece of glass needs to be put back as it serves a structural purpose and removing it has reduced the safety factor of the tank.. Does not having guarantee its going to leak/fail... NO.. but has it reduced the strength of the tank and stressed the seals more by removing it.. YES.. It now has a greater change of failing than it did before..

Your still wrong to suggest that to a new reefer. the OP did not post a question on how to run a tank without a skimmer.

It’s a small tank so your probably fine removing the brace, even better would be to re silicone it out far enough so you have room for the skimmer tube, that way you have the structional brace.

Properly educating someone regardless of their experience level is never wrong..
Ive stated many times that people don't need a skimmer or gfo/media reactors or macro algae refugiums or fancy controllers,etc... to have a successful tank. And thats a fact
I will also continue to provide information above and beyond the question asked whenever I feel it may help.

Oki guys i have ordered my skimmer it arrives tomorrow. then when i see how it fits i will get my friend to cut the glass round whatever pipes are needed and glue the glass shelf back in place and hopefully then i can get on with the fun stuff i thought reef keeping was meant to be relaxing this bloody tank is giving me sleepless nights!:headwally:

On a brighter note i can now write a manual on best noob mistakes ever!!

Many ways to run a tank successfully including without a skimmer. If you want to argue so vehemently that it's necessary for someone's first tank can you elaborate in detail on why?

Skimmer arrived and its now running phew!! I feel like a pro now making bubbles and stuff yay!! My friend had a good laugh at my swearing while trying to assemble it :lmao: but now i feel happy that my tomato clown fish has a bigger home.

And i'm not even going to try and explain my newest noob mistake because its far to stupid to even comprehend but now i have a very sore finger haha

Just as a heads up, you will likely be spending a fair chunk of time 'tuning' your new skimmer for the first few weeks until its settled in and built up its coat. So do not get too discouraged if you find out you need to keep adjusting it frequently for a while.

Thanks it's running like a tea colour in the collection cup lot of gunky stuff.Quite clever how skimmers work and the best bit is no more smelly canister filter!! That thing had to go.

Is that cyanobacteria all over that rock on the right??
If so siphon it out with water changes and turn lights off...

As you don't have any corals you don't need lights..

Urm i bought rock from two stores half was live rock what was originally in my 13 gallon nano and dry rock what was a burgundy colour already that's the rocks on the right hand side it's a total diff colour to the live rocks.

When i decided to purchase a bigger tank i used everything that was in my nano in the new tank and left it with no lights on for 14 days and added the live sand and that dr timms magic juice stuff.

Then i added the dry rocks hoping that the good bacteria would jump onto my dry rocks from the live rocks out of my nano.Then i added one mushroom coral and my tomato clown fish after another week to let the bacteria build up.

I'm not sure if i have done this right but i kinda figured it would be a bad idea to add all four of my fish at once out of my nano.

Looks like cyano to me, does it certainly off easy?

Tank is looking good so far, have you thought about painting the back black or blue to hide the wires?

Red sponge or coralline more likely since it came from an established tank. Does not look like cyano to me at all.



I second the post about painting the back, or putting something on it.

The skimmer will smell just as bad as the canister filter if you let it get really black and sludgy. Mine smells like sewage when I clean it

Yes it does come off easy and if i'm honest i've never even thought about how to syphon this tank i probably need to buy some piece of equipment to help me out because i really hated the canister filter. I do my water changes 10 percent everyday simply because i'm scared that if i mess up on big water changes i might kill my fish.

But painting the tank a nice blue colour sounds good my soft coral frags arrive on thursday.So it would be nice to have everything prepared by then.And i was up all night sorting my nano tank out

Oki thanks maybe i will do it every other day.Hopefully my skimmer will help keep better water I also bought a digital salinity tester what i'm really impressed with it makes measuring salinity so much easier.

My soft coral frags arrive tomorrow it was heaps of fun picking them i do have a few questions about how you know where to place them in a tank.
