What is the best sand for my new 24 gal nano and where can I get some local?

ALSO, if you have some live sand I can use for seeding, please bring me a bag to the meet. Hopefully, I'll be needing it almost immediately! :D

I would go with the CaribSea Oolitic Select sand. Or maybe the Seafloor Fiji Pink. I forget what the typical measurement is for sand weight. I want to say 1lb for every gallon will typically give you 1" depth??? Doesn't make sense with tall tanks, so I'm not certain. Anyone else know what the measurement is?

I know Eddies carries the Oolitic and can probably order the Fiji Pink IF they don't have it. You can probably check prices with Tony at SB too.

So pretty much in the range of 0.2-1.5 mm is what you'd suggest...not the larger sizes (2-4 mm).

Remember, I'm a substrate NOOB! :D

Haha. The smaller size provides more surface area for colonization of bacteria. It also packs tighter, so you would need less to create a DSB for denitrifying bacteria. Also, since it packs tighter, there is less of a chance detritus can settle in it. Plus the size enables you to keep certain species of inverts and fish (fungia plate, sand sifting gobies, etc.)

Larger size substrates are for the most part the opposite of these reasons.

You should have picked up Calfo's book! He has a whole section on substrates. Haha :lol2:

An opinion, here I use any where from 3-5" of oolitic sand a mixtures of different ones...and sizes but thats my choice i also stay any where from (fine muds and silt types at the 0 area, and up to the corser....0+ ---> 3MM

I personally like sand any where i can put it in my sytem, breader tanks, EXlg.fuges(deep)

I have some sand if u like to come pick some up?? ....

peace

Sands for wifes new nano.

I have a 5 gallon bucket full to the brim of Real Southdown sand. It came with my tank when I bought it, tank is from PA so this sand is the real stuff. (Southdown comes from PA) It is used and probably should be rinsed well before re-using it. Southdown is the very fine WHITE sand. Similiar to the sank found in Bahamas/Carribean area beaches. Beautiful sand but because I wasnt letting my new tank cycle before swapping stuff, I didnt want to use that. Wanted to go with brand new clean sand and just seed with some live sand. I am willing to part with some of it if your interested Tony. Let me know before hand though as its heavy as can be and would rather not lug to the meeting for no reason. I could bring a cup of it for you to check out if you would like also. Let me know.
Wink

Thanks or the offer Woneye. Since I don't need very much (small tank), I think I'll just stick with new sand then use a bit of live sand to seed it.

Thanks again
