Nem tucks in most of day

I got a RBTA a month ago. He only comes out a couple hours a day, usually in the morning. Otherwise he tucks completely in under a rock shelf.

Is this normal? What parameters could be throwing him off otherwise?

It might be light. How is the pattern/intensity after 'sun up'?

How is flow through the day?

What about water Chemical levels?

As pH may rise when the lights come on maybe it is too high for it or is still acclimating?

The tank size is 450g's - 8x3x2.5 and I have 4 250W MH bulbs over it. They turn on at 1pm and off at 7pm (e.g. 6 hours photoperiod). I also have some T5's (4 36W's), but they are only for color... bulbs are 2-3 years old; so really am only getting UV, etc, from the MH's.

Flow is predominantly sourced from 2 MP60's, other than what I get from my return pumps from the sump. I get a total of around 40X flow max, ranging from 30-40X throughout the day depending on MP setting.

Chem stats:
KH - 7.5 dKH
Calc - 500ppm
Mg - 1400ppm
pH - generally around 8.4, but have no idea if my probe is still accurate

I tried to feed him just now while he was out, but he would not take the food. So am getting a little worried.

Here is a before and now picture:

Not sure if this would have any effect on it but your calcium is to high should be like 430ish and Mg is a little to high also needs to be around 1300.

His levels are perfectly acceptable and not considered 'too' high at all. I run my numbers close to his, accept my alk is closer to 9.

If you have a lot of SPS in the tank then that calcium level would be ok but I could not see a lot of SPS in there to keep it at that level.

Doesn't matter, sps or no sps. Not harming anything but not helping anything either. If you use high quality salt mix like red sea coral pro, then you might have high levels anyhow.

If it only comes out in the morning and your T5s are all that's on in the morning ... and they are old bulbs I suggest you replace those bulbs. At least the period when it is out it's getting some better light.

PO4 and NO3 test results both came back with 0 of each. For reference I used both Salifert and Hanna testkits for PO4 and both API and Redsea Pro for NO3 and got same result. Should I be doing something to increase these.. e.g. do Nem's need a little PO4 and/or NO3?

I use Salifert for KH, Calc and Mg.

There is a lot of SPS in the tank, but relative to the size and water volume, really doesn't look very full. I use a high Calc salt mix and also run a calcium reactor, so the calcium that is showing up is somewhat fixed as to what it takes to maintain my KH at.

The only problem with changing out the T5 bulbs is that the Nem is on the backside of a rock and the angle of the T5's wouldn't really hit it, but the lights are due for a change out anyway so will give that a try.

Everything else seems to be thriving in the tank, SPS, LPS, Zoa's and fish/inverts, so I am just not sure what is upsetting the Nem.

Anemones do not need PO4 or NO3 ... zero is good. If the lights are better it might move out to get to the light so I'd definately give it a shot. You might want to add a magenta bulb/tube into the mix with actinic and whites. It gives a nice "tone" to the overall light and makes the colors pop more.

I agree with changing your bulbs. Although I'm not sure this will help our nem color back up, it's always good practice to change every 6-12 months, even if the t5 are only supplements.

Still need to get the bulbs changed, but in good news I did get him to eat yesterday. His tentacles would not grasp the food (small chunk of silverside), but I held the food near his mouth long enough to close around it.
