NeoSporin on Maroon Clown

Hello, my Maroon/Tomatoe Clown has been infected with what seems to be "Black Ich". At least thats what I think it is.

Any drawbacks on the meds I used on him? Hydrogen Peroxide,Medicated Iodine, and NeoSporin.

The bacteria has eaten its way deep (halfway through) into his left side. Basically, I can see the inside right cavity wall. I've used a few Chems like Kick Ich,Ich Stop,etc, but these chemicals irritate the fish's skin making him lose his slime coat, hence "burning" his skin and hurting his wound so much more.

So, being our favorite fish, I took him out of the tank and gently scraped off the bacteria. With a Q-Tip I added some Hydrogen Peroxide, Medicated Iodine,(he didnt like that!! but after a few seconds he was fine) and lastly NeoSporin.

The NeoSporin won't stay on the wound because of the water on him, but I managed to get some in the wound. I placed him back in the tank, and seems fine. He's not "Spunky" and full of attitude as before, hate to see him die.

You need to treat it for a bacteria infection and skin wounds

Right now the clown is in the main tank...we don't have a qt yet. I was thinking of putting a uv light in the sump (heard this kills bacteria).

if u can afford a uv light u can afford a qt tank. fill it with water from your reef, run an aquaclear or somthing similar that you can add carbon to and if you have a dirty sponge in your tank put that in the aquaclear to keep up biologicals

treat the tank with maracyn 2 double the dose on the box. get a picture up too

Well, black ich won't be affected by neosporin, but your description of the wound doesn't really sound much like black ich anyway.

I second the recommendation that you set up a QT tank and treat your fish with FISH MEDS. The meds you are using may well kick the black ich (actually a type of parasitic flatworms), but it might also kill your clown. IF you have a bacterial infection (the only thing that would be helped by the neosporin and UV light), it would be secondary to the any black ich infection... but again, I'm not sure what type of disease you really have going on.

Also , here is some background: we brought home a small hippo tang 2 weeks ago. When we bought him, his color was pretty faded but the guy from the LFS fed him and he had a good appetite so we brought him home. The next day, he was covered in small white spots and had a white film. His faded color looked even worse. Within a week, he was dead with a wound on his side. It was after that that the clown started getting sick. The wound in the pic first started as a small white dot. It continued to get bigger and more ragged looking. He is covered with a white film and his eyes are cloudy. He is still nibbling but not eating like before.

Any ideas on diagnosing the nasty disease? We will setup the qt tank today - do you still think maracyn for a treatment?

I would start with a maracyn. im not an experct. maracyn treats gram posative bacterial and fungal diseases in fish. maracyn 2 treats gram negative bacterial infections, and helps with fish that wont eat anymore. they are both broad spectrum antibiotics, and eith should at least help.

the medicine will come with a chart and you answer the questions to figure out what you need to treat with. but when i followed it here with thinking of your picture, the end result on the chart says "treat with saltwater maracyn 2 or saltwater maracyn' so i think you just need an antibiotic either way. but like i said double the dose on the package. so if you get a ten gal qt tank, use 2 tabs the first day, then 1 tab a day the rest of treatment.

try using wardley fungus-ade. i used that on my oc clowns and fixed em right up. i used the 'dipping' method if you know what i mean by saying that. i also added some to the tank to kill the other bugs that could be in there. the only thing is it kills corals etc....

Update: we've had the clown in a 10g QT tank for 8 or 9 days now treating with maracyn2. By day 7, we'd seen a huge improvement with new skin growth over the wound and the white film and cloudy eyes. We continued the treatment with water changes every 2-3 days, but yesterday, we noticed the cloudy eyes coming back. We made sure to add more meds after each water change.

Also, we had a copepod explosion. From what we've seen on other posts, they look to be harpacticoid pods. They are absolutely everywhere. Should we change the water? Are they harmful? Do they impact the treatment. And while we've on the subject, why isn't the treament working anymore? Should we change to a different med?

i think maracyn treats clkoudy eyes. not posative you'll have to read the box. (its dif than maracyn 2)

Neosporin wouldn't hurt--if it is bacterial and not necessarily a combination of pathogens. It is just neomycin sulfate with a petroleum based product. However, it doesn't work that great underwater, since it is insolube. They do make a neomycin sulfate medication, BioBandage, that may be more effective. I would keep trying a medicinal bath as you are now before using a more radical approach, though, because you have to physically handle the fish to administer the above medications (which will induce added stress).
