Neptune and Calc reactor setup

Been getting some different feedback in regards to the wrong or right way to set the system up.

Previously, prior to purchasing the neptune system, I had my reactor setup with a American Marine pinpoint monitor. The ph monitor was built into the reactor and I could control the affluent inside the reactor by switching the solenoid on and off via the settings on the American Marine controller. The advice I'm getting from my LFS is to control the affluent by only adjusting the drip rate. Any advice from experience would be appreciated.

Use a PH probe off the apex, dial in your PH in the reactor and set the drip rate as needed to maintain the tank perams.
