Nesting Crabs?

Rainbow Reef

Hi,

I've got two scarlet hermits who have been in my newer nano tank for about three months now. A little over a week ago they both moved to a back corner of the tank and have been in close proximity ever since.

At times one has their legs out over the base of the other while it's turned upside down. At other times, the opening of their shells are joined? After a week of this behavior, I reluctantly separated them, thinking that one was perhaps after the other's shell. They quickly moved back into formation.

Could they be mating or trying to protect a clutch of eggs? Other explanations?
