New 125 On The Block - Watch The Process! *Pictures Inside*

Thanks, Breaker. I hope some other people will chime in with some advice, or at least point me towards something I'm missing.

Not sure what to tell you. I've had some acros in there for about 4 weeks and they are doing great. My parms are the same as your's except for the temp. Mine is near 81. Same lighting too.

Thrlride: The actinics go on around 7am, MH at 8am, then MH off at 7:30ish pm, actinics around 8pm. so about 12hours of MH lighting.

Sounds about right... How did you acclimate? What were the conditions of the tanks the frags came out of?

I've gotten frags/colonies from just about every type of condition. Some are aquacultured, others are wild colonies. It seems that the aquacultured have been doing better, but still not that great. I'll try to post some pics tomorrow showing any growth (or lack thereof) and the types of corals.

Well...I'm not giving up just yet...
I removed the SB from my refuge today, and I'm liking it. Boy, the crap that comes out of your rock is amazing!
Anyways, one of the wild colonies that I had fragged a few weeks ago (due to severe RTN/STN) seems to be doing very well. Good extension and coloring up. No noticable growth yet, but I'm hoping.....
Well, onto building the new equipment room! :)

hey TJ

I read earlier about your dictyota problem. what did you do to get rid of it?? i saw the long spine urchin. did it help?? mine didnt. just ate coralline. im battling it now and I hate it

Poknsnok: Never got rid of it...yet. I'm going to be cooking my rock next month, so that should take care of it, and everything else!

Yeah, but were you happy once it was done? Going for the nutrient poor system with cooked rock and barebottom.

With the amount of fish I have I'm no where near nutrient poor. The only reason I even cooked the rock was because it was given to me and I had nowhere for it to go. I didn't want to sell it though so I put it in a rubbermaid brute trashcan with a heater and pump and let it sit. I did a few water changes and moved it a couple of times.

Well, as part of the new setup, I just ordered a ton of stuff from MRC. Calcium reactor, regulator, pH controller, CO2 bottle, etc..and a new Reeflow Barracuda pump as my new return.
I'll post pics of how the setup is coming along. I might also tear the tank down in order to get the sand bed out, unless someone has any suggestions on removing a SB without tearing the tank apart.

TJ

do you have any new pics of your setup? I would like to see how things are going. How are the SPS doing?

I saw my first true SPS tank last weekend at a place called Kermit's reef in Memphis, TN and it was AMAZING! It really has me thinking of going the SPS route. I have two pieces in my tank now and they are not doing so hot. I am in the process of adding a refugium and I am hoping that will clean my water up a little and let the SPS do better. I have a lot to learn before heading headfirst into SPS land though.

Update With Pictures

Here's an update on what's happening. First off, here's the PVC rack I built for the rocks in the center of the tank.

Here's the old sump/refuge...No Laughing!!!

This is the new setup...well, not completely. But at least it's the two bins and the stand I made. I'll be painting the stand to protect it, and I've braced the heck out of it, you could park a car on it.

This is what the new layout will look like when it's completed.

As you know, I've started to remove my SB...here's two good reasons why:

Now, after getting almost no sand out, and at the same time removing about 6 gallons of water, I've decided to go the tank tear-down route. :(

I ordered my starboard today, so when it comes I'm going to remove everything into one of the new black sump/fuge tubs, along with all the tank water. I'll then use the SB removal tool (shop vac) and put everything back in the tank. Any tips on this process would be great!

After everything is back in order, I'll be shutting down the sump in the basement, draining it, moving out the old and plumbing in the new. While that's going on, I'll be turning off the tank lights to avoid overheating the tank while the chiller and return pump is off-line. I plan to have as much done as possible before shutting things down.

This process will take place over the next 1-2 weeks. The starboard should be here this week, and the rest of my equipment will be here on Wednesday. Again, pics and updates will be posted.

Finally...I've got a calcium reactor!!! Hopefully my new return pump will be here on Friday, along with my starboard so I can have fun, fun, fun this weekend!

I just tested my tank water with my new Salifert kits, and it shows 0.0 PO4 (hmm, I thought for sure that would be different) and 400 for calcium. Let's hope that the BB and Calc Reactor wil help maintain those numbers while boosting the growth and helping get rid of the macros.

Man looking good, cant wait to see what its like after you put it all back up.

Best of luck, I'm tagging along!
