New 180 Help

Hi All-

Longtime reader first time poster. I am proud to have my new 180 up and running. One problem has been plaguing me from the start. I have two Durso drains plumed to the Sump that run into filter socks. The one on the right is working great with no issues. The one on the left which has a much shorter run is causing the water level inside the overflow box to rise and fall about 2 inches every few minutes. Also the filer sock on that side has a ton of bubble coming out of the top.

The second thing I did was use Bio Spira to begin the cycle on my tank. I used BRS Reef saver for my rock and Carib Sea live sand. I've been up and ruining for a week and I currently have the following parameter.

  • Ammonia-0
  • Nitrite 0
  • Nitrate .1
  • PH 8.2
  • Salinity 1.022
  • temp 76F

    • Am I done cycling? It seems way to fast considering everything I've read thus far. I am not running my reactors or my skimmer. Any and all thoughts are really appreciated.

Dursos can be tricky, it sounds like the durso that's being a pain could be draining to fast. Do you have a ball or gate valve on it? As far as the cycle goes that's way to quick and sounds like it hasn't even happened yet. Have you done anything to spike your ammonia? Bio spira works great but the bacteria needs something to feed on.

Hi Sush

I haven't done anything other than add the bio spira and added a couple of damsels. I know that's cruel in some people's eyes. But it's the tried and true method. Plus my wife is pregnant so no stinky shrimp allowed.

I don't have any valves on the return line. What are your thoughts?

    • :fish1: Hi Delta, I would bring up the salinity to match NSW, around 1.026, Since you used bacteria in a bottle, and live sand to start the system, you may have already cycled your tank, bacteria wise. As for the overflows, due you have a cap on the stand pipes with a small hole in the top? :fish1:

Green,

Thanks for the response on the cycling! I think I may just have so much water volume that following the instructions and having good bio spira may have worked as prescribed.

Yes I have wholes in the top of the Durso. I used off the shelf Durso pipes. I am noticing small bubbles coming from the bottom of the stand pipe. I've adjusted the pipe and drilled a slightly large whole. Which has has helped the rise and fall issue. But I'm still getting a ton of bubbles down in my filter sock.

New 180 Help

Delta, I get a lot of "light chop" (bubbles) in my filter socks from my Durso overflows as well. Not really sure a good remedy as of yet. It's a bit noisy. But I'm following this!

Ps I had to add that tidbit in for any pilot who may be reading. I'm an AA pilot. [emoji4]

The minute i read it I knew. I'm starting to rethink my handle! LOL

My best solution thus far is to move the sock up in the holder. That way the bubbles don't flow over into the Sump. Still not a real solution but I'm literally out of options. The only think I'm thinking is putting a valve on the drain line. But I understand thats a big no-no in this hobby.

I drilled incrementally larger holes in the top of the durso, eventually ending with a 1/4" hole. That seems to have stopped the rise and fall of the water level in the overflow. I'm still at a loss for the bubble issue.

I also retested all of my parameters today. I can't believe that after 1 week I'm reading zeros on my nitrites and nitrates. Also, my Ph and Ammonia are spot on. I haven't had any algae or diatoms yet. And I'm hoping to avoid it while I continue to let the tank settle in. Any thoughts on when I should add the protein skimmer?

That sure looks like a very large DOC count. Have you checked your phosphates?

Confused by what DOC count is? Can you elaborate. As an addition I'm now running a BRS GFO/Carbon reactor. My fish are thriving. And my last updated specs are:
